Have you read any Ursula Le Guin? She makes a conscious effort to represent humanity in all its bewildering and beautiful variety, even (especially) on other planets and in other worlds. She is unquestionedly my favorite author, and I've pretty much given up on all other sci fi/fantasy because the heteronormativity thing makes me gag.
