in the previous book the girl griffins joined in with battles and hunting and stuff. and in the one I just read they did some nifty defensive magic. But then when they were protecting people it was constantly being connected to being a mother, like protecting babies. They don't usually make that connection when guys defend people. So it's still gender roles.
