BFA 135: Legend of the Cybermen
Twisty. Though I guessed big bits of the important bits at the end of last month. Jamie being fictional just explained everything tidy, and if he is, then why wouldn't Zoe be? Her being both fictional and real I had not guessed, but around the bit of the story where she explained all that it kind of dragged quite a lot so I'm still not clear on the details. Except that Zoe wrote Doctor Who fanfiction and gave all her characters free will. One Of Us.
I delayed listening to this story because I didn't want to be right about Jamie. On the one hand there's a Jamie in the land of fiction who'll continue forever. On the other hand he's not proper Jamie that the Doctor travelled with, so the Doctor still got parted from his friends forever, and it's double sad. :-(
I liked the bit where he got bitter and told the Doctor off for never checking on him. The bit where the Doctor didn't offer any excuses or explanations was less satisfying yet I guess in character. But it contributed to the flimsy feeling of the story, like fanfic in the not really adding or changing to the main story. Lots of little side frills and not so much important added.
It wasn't really about the Doctor. He thought of the clever thing to fix everything, as usual, but we don't learn much about him and he don't do much. Although the bit where he got all grrr about vampires and Jamie called it a clan thing was :-)
The story kept trying to be funny. And succeeding quite a bit. But :-/
There was one bit where I lost a level of my game because I was *facepalm* at the 'you were slipping into metafiction' bit and didn't drop a gem bomb at the right time. That shouldn't be a reason to dislike the story though.
It played games with reality like The Mind Robber did, but not in a way that told us anything about Zoe or Jamie or the Doctor, not for real, by the end of the story. And it thought it was clever a bit loudly.
And mostly I'm sad it was not proper Jamie and proper Zoe and they can't go have adventures in time and space with 6 some more.
I may possibly be sulking at the story.
So I don't like it so very much. Even though it had good bits.
