Daemons

It purely gives me the creeps when fanfic does the His Dark Materials daemon thing and makes one character the daemon of another. Especially because it's never Clint being an actual Hawkeye partnered up with Coulson or whoever. Fic never makes the point of view characters, the heroes, into the animal shaped half of that person. That's what sidekicks and supporting characters are for. And girlfriends.

Turning people's girlfriends into animals is a novel way to get them out of the way of the /
but not a pleasant one.

Pepper is not the animal spirit of Tony Stark. Pepper is her own adult and independent person. Or else it's really creepy.

I've seen a couple of HDM-style daemon fanfics, but not actually making one canon character another character's daemon, just giving the characters daemons. I agree that this phenomenon is creepy.

I've seen this done reasonably well once in a BBC Sherlock fic, where (SPOILER-SPOILER-SPOILER-SPOILER-SPOILER) Sherlock is Mycroft's daemon who insists on living as his own independent person, and Moriarty is Molly Hooper's daemon.

I also read a Sherlock BBC one where they did this, but I'm not sure it's the same fic that [personal profile] kickair8p mentioned. I can't remember there being Molly/Moriarty. Though I could be wrong, it's been a while since I read it.

I remember thinking they dealt with the creepy subject matter in a satisfying way. Can try and find the link if you like.
