I have been playing Ghost Stories some more.
It is fiddly and I am not sure I've read the rules right as yet.
But I might have just won a solo game.
I say might because I think I muddled the last couple of moves, and missing even one roll out might have made all the difference, but if I unmuddled correctly then I won.
It is somehow nearly three in the morning, so I think maybe probably muddled win is pretty good going.
Also the game is interesting enough that it got to be nearly three in the morning rather unexpectedly.
So that was a good investment already.

There are ways to increase the difficulty if I start reliably winning, but I dont think I'll need them today.

... I'll need sleep today, obviously.

The setup is fiddly every time and the board sides is difficult to randomise and I think I've made one of the card backs a bit damaged already, which I realise now is why the little figures have a bag to go in, but oh well.

But is a good game for one player, many variables very tricky.

I dont know how it will play with more people.

Going to be fun finding out.

I definitely won at Ghost Stories this time.
Pretty definitely.
Probably.

... I might need to re read the rules about hauntings and when you put the ghosts out, and possibly might have made it a whole lot easier by a couple turns per ghost, but there's a lot of moving parts to these rules and I'm doing my best.

It seems winnable though, at least played solo on initiate easy, so that's good.

I now own Ghost Stories, Catan, Pandemic, Pandemic Rising Tide (which I still haven't played), Munchkin with a couple of mini booster packs, Uno and regular playing cards, and one of those boxes that say 100 games but actually mean chess and some random stuff. It was on sale. Like the uno and still sealed playing cards actually. I have a lot of other cards and Many of magic the gathering cards I haven't played for a really long time. Probably some other stuff in drawers. Is fun.

I like board games night and I play these at science fiction night if we run out of words, which happens because the amount of F&SF you can watch in two weeks somehow doesn't always stretch to the amount you can talk about in 2.5 hours.

I think they're a good investment because they cost a couple of movies (or three or four) but they play for longer and more often. And they're interactive. And I like the cooperate games and the ones where you have to consult the other players, so they're practice using my out loud words.

... but they're still only really useful for Wednesday nights, except for this solo mode one, so I should probably stop there.

... judging by my collection of RPG rule books, several feet long and rising, despite the lack of a game group, I am unlikely to stop there. But I'm having fun.

And the games won't become unplayable obsolete if one fiddly bit of electronics does a Thing or the game manufacturers go out of business, unlike a whole bunch of computer games I also own.

So these are good, and I'm likely to be able to keep playing them in the old people home...
