Guess at precisely what minute I was yelling "TWO?! NO!!!"
... yup. Two weeks. No episode for two weeks. Nooooo!

Also it says something about my relative investment in different characters that a perfectly good episode is suddenly entirely eclipsed by A Certain Guest Character turning up in the promos.
My insides did the happy flippy thing. It's cool.

But today's actual episode:

Lazarus: not much of a clue then.

Church organ: turned up to 11!

... okay, I actually hit mute and kind of facepalmed then, but in principle that was fun.

"You've changed" from Martha's mum - waaaaaay too soon. I mean it's only been one night, for real this time, all she could reasonably say is that she's having an odd night.

I'm kind of fed up the youthing machine doesn't work... as RTD is just saying on the Confidential right now.

The thing I don't like is all this about the burden of immortality. Because it's *bollocks*. Lazarus was *right* - human is about trying not to die! Mind you, the Doctor is completely right too, it's not the years, it's the mileage. And you can't just say which one is more valuable and feed them to him, that's not on. So they're having an argument where I don't agree with either of them.

The key difference is - if you've got a youthing machine, you *don't* have to end up alone.
And the Doctor doesn't either - lots of options going on. That's just how he feels at that moment. I suspect he'll feel rather different by the end of the season.

Otherwise I'll sulk because really, all that 'hope I die before I get old' bit - which *is* what that thing is about - is more and more stupid the older you get.

I'm bugged by the age politics in the season - this is the second old person turned vampire so far. It better tie to specific-theme rather than be a portrayal of ageing in general! I mean, the Doctor is old, so this is a Doctor=vampire thing? But it looks like just picking up on some really nasty themes that hang out in media portrayals of older people.

'Leo' on having a stuntman - "someone else gets smashed in the face, collect his man-points after"
:-D

"My mum just pinched my bum. That's not weird!"
*facepalm*

I love Martha's family. They really bring a lot to the episode, the interactions. She's really working those 'dependent' points.
...er, for the geeky GURPS way to say it...
(if she had a character sheet, she'd be trading off points in 'dependent' disadvantage and pouring them into all these knowledge skills, which therefore would mean her dependents are the source of most of her adventures to pay for the skills.)

I love Martha more with every episode. Competent! Medical! collect genetic samples - although, eeew. I mean, I've had guys kiss my hand before but they were being silly. This guy was being slime. Very icky.
And then use of sonic screwdriver, and the getting the security system working, and asking the right questions, and being bait on purpose (oh how much do I prefer that to the classic trip and fall).

And I do like this thing with Saxon trying to drive a wedge, use the family. Whyever that turns out to be it's a nice move.

Okay... the feminist read on this thing... So, there's the thing where kissing is deadly dangerous, and speaking up for common sense against the doctor's bizarre orders is deadly dangerous, and in all cases it's deadly to women. Oh, except for the ambulance people, possibly, but you can't tell. It... bugs me.

I think the CGI creature is fun considering the budget. It has a bit from Blade, the mouth that opens, it has a lot of gross anatomical looking bits, it's got the goods for a monster.
It just... kind of looks like shit, also. Sorry. Whacking great CGI monsters look like CGI monsters on this budget. It's a thing.

The whizzy shiny machine though, that worked. That was fun.

Machines are always easier.

"you'll never hear the Doctor use the word monster"
yaays

Use of church for sanctuary and weapon... I don't know. I mean, I know there's always lots of churches looking impressive and architectural, but... I'm not Christian, so having two out of three series so far have a church as a thing? I don't know.

I loved the bit with the electrical fitting and the gas taps.

And I *adore* the old school meta joke about how it shouldn't take that long to reverse a polarity. That was just... I mean, injoke, yes, but, *funny*.

Martha at the end of the episode... I really, really, really like this woman.
Won't go along as if it's a treat! Wheeee! Respect the companion, dude!

I also love that their key moment is marked by miscommunication. Because hello to the themey.
Got to love that.

Ooh, the Confidential is showing how to make a Raknoss empress. That's just awesome.

... now it makes me sad to compare this episode's CGI thing.

The Werewolf is also gorgeous. That's impressive, it really is.

"when we create creatures, cause they take so long, we get very emotionally attached to them"
... pet werewolf! beast to take home!
;-)

These long Confidentials don't exactly have more to offer. I mean, this is all stuff from previous seasons without any new data. Why do we need so much about that?

ooooh, Confidential showing the kaboom! Love it!
"I was never consulted" about doing the kaboom stunt. heh, yeah,
"wanting in manliness"
"I wouldn't be allowed to do it unless it was completely safe"
tell yourself that, dude

stunt dude "tested it myself" yes indeed

flame retardant gel down the back of his head. yup, that'll make you feel comfortable.

I like his attitude to stunt men. Yes.

See this bit I like, this bit goes with this episode.

Although playing with gas taps gives me a much more realistic uncomfortable feeling than playing with alien technology ever does. I mean, I know gas taps, you know? That hissy noise is *not good*.

Looks awesome there. Boom!

ooooh, pretty church architecture!
... no I don't worship there, I just love the pointy arches and suchlike. I'm goth. It's a thing.

... they just had him standing there casually in the black tie with the button undone framed by the church architecture.
I had a moment of remembering exactly how hot he is. Oh yes. That hit buttons I hadn't previously known I had.

Wells. Huh. Thought I knew that arch, don't know how common it is.

Actually seeing it in this Confidential shows me how much of the specifically christian iconography didn't show up in the episode.

huh, not DT's hands in closeup. Someone who can actually play.

It's amazing how much sound can do in the DW 'verse.
*nods solemnly*

Heh, talking about filming naked. Always wondered what his costume in Doctor Who would be like, he says. Funny.

This week episode: I liked it, quite a lot. I don't know, I might like it more or less depending on rewatch and how it fits in. Plus I have a consistent pattern of only sorta liking things on first watch but loving them on rewatch. I don't know, maybe I don't like surprises. But it had moments I really love and none I hate, so win.

And the next time bits?
happy!
