They'll find their middle ground if they would each give an inch, but they won't; they're both too comfortable in the life and space they each created for himself.

Some days they want to give, inches and miles and years and all, but they've both said and bled too much to back down now.

The day they need is the one where they call it all well spent and hard earned experience, without it feeling like a death to change.

You'd think Ethan would be better at that, but nooooo...

I always thought that after a certain age, when retirement is near, they might both be a bit more relaxed about their "chosen careers".

And Cat always thought that after what Giles had been through with Willow, when she lost control and he helped her find it again, it might change his perspective on Ethan just a little, might make him just a touch more forgiving.

the Willow thing could also have the opposite effect - Willow was immediately remorseful, Ethan... isn't.
And it could make Ethan just a tad bit resentful. Cute little girls get second chances, Ethans don't.

But yeah, the optimistic version has understanding in it.

Yes, there is the astounding lack of regret there that Giles can't understand or live with, *grin*.

The resentment - oh yeah. Even more regarding things like Andrew, but also with Willow and others. Some people do much worse - and hey, slayer/watcher team forgave vampires, more than once. But Ethan, oh no, he gets screwed with American soldiers, a well-known form of intimidation...

Uh, I mean yeah, I can see that he'd be a tad bit resentful.

....And did anyone AT ALL give him credit for it? He warned Giles about pretty much half the badness of the season. That's good-guy work, he should've gotten *some* credit.

Neither Giles nor Ethan are naturally good at maths; Giles worked hard to learn it, but Ethan just figured out a way to get round using it most of the time.

With what you might call practical math, however, the kind with dollar and pounds and exactly how much you can overcharge someone before they twig, Ethan is rather better than Giles, who has a residual sense that finance should be fair.

Giles of course has had to leave town in a hurry rather less often.
