"So Jack, why didn't you use the vortex manipulator to get away from the about to explode bomb? All you had to do was press some buttons and it did timeport and teleport."
"Well it's the weirdest thing. Someone in 1941 sent me a drink, so I figure, free alcohol, great! And then the next thing I remember it's the next morning and I'm waking up in a strange bed. Which happens. But then I check my wristband and half the functions have burned out! Not a good moment for me, I tell you. But I still have the ship, so it's fine, I can get back to civilization, maybe get the parts to fix it. Only before I do that I end up with a bomb on board."
"So all you can do is sit there and have a drink?"
"Right! And, okay, it's what got me into the mess, but what does it matter by then?"
"But it was working to get away from Satellite 5."
"It was that time in Cardiff, with the Slitheen. We'd been there a couple of days before that, checking out the shops. Rose bought me some 21st century threads and I went out to see how they worked. Again, some guy sends a drink over, so I figure they work pretty well. And then I wake up the next day..."
"... in a strange bed. That happen a lot to you?"
"Oh yeah. But that time it *really* worked out, because my wristband was back, good as new, like it had never been damaged. I get back and we've got work to do, I never get the time to figure it out. And then I get back to 1869, and the band burns out."
"Again."
"Except it *wasn't* again. I had time to think about it. By the time 1941 came around again I realised, if I'd had that working, I never would have travelled with the Doctor, and I wouldn't miss that for anything. So I send a guy, and he sends a drink..."
"You didn't!"
"Steal it from myself and swap the future version in. And, yeah, it was dangerous, tampering with the timeline that way, but not half as dangerous as not being there for the Doctor when the day comes."
"So then when you get to Cardiff...?"
"I was there waiting. Sent a girl that time, my second in command. She came back smiling, never would tell me why. Just wish I could remember it."
"Hah! Because of course it couldn't just be knocking out her boss."
"... knowing her? She wouldn't grin like that unless she'd knifed me too."
"..."
"Not that I knew that at the time."
"... Okay." *pause, thinks* "So... okay, there's one vortex manipulator..."
"Right."
"You got it as a Time Agent."
"Yes."
"Then you stole it from yourself."
"And then I gave it back."
"So... what did you do with it between times?"
Jack grins, all sparkle and secrets, and leans back. "Well, that would be a much longer story."
"... I could buy you a drink."
