Time loops
Sep. 7th, 2007 09:54 amI was going over Torchwood 1-13 in my head again and something just occured to me about Rhys:
Okay, so what we see is, there's a guy that's a time traveller, that can take people out of their own time and put them in another so smoothly they don't notice his intervention. Bilis got Jack to walk into another year without noticing/identifying the journey.
There's a Rift, spitting people out from all over spacetime. When the Rift gets cranked fully open everyone who fell through it goes back, or at least disappears.
And there's Rhys. Dead. And vanishing from the table when the Rift goes boom.
Here's the thing - I don't think that was the local version of Rhys.
Coming back to life when the Rift goes off makes no sense. It's quite a different phenomenon than any of the other things we saw the Rift do.
But a lot of people fell through time that day. They got noticed because they were out of place - the Roman soldier, the Civil War guys. But what about all the ones who weren't far enough out of place to notice? Would it only be big showy timeslips like that, or could it be one fat bloke in his own kitchen, cleaning the oven, suddenly in the wrong year?
And it wouldn't be very far back. He looked the same, he didn't notice anything odd about the kitchen, he felt he was home.
So then what we saw happen is - Gwen is shown a 'vision of the future' - of Rhys lying in their flat very dead. She runs home and finds Rhys. There was a fanfic that pointed out that having him home in the middle of the day was odd, why wasn't he at work? And then he was at work in that fanfic, and it never got around to saying where other-Rhys was from iirc. Well what if NOW-Rhys was at work, but FUTURE-Rhys was in the kitchen?
Then, when the Rift opens, the corpse of FUTURE-Rhys goes back where it came from - in his own flat, in the NEAR FUTURE.
So some day, Gwen is going to go home and find Rhys dead on the floor, stabbed, exactly like the vision - because when he came back from Torchwood he fell down from bench height until he was lying on the floor in the spot he'd been when he timeslipped.
I don't know if it's an intended read of canon, but it'd make awesome ficbunny.
