I been reading some more. I should probably check again what we're supposed to have read; odds are I managed that at some point, but it would be typical if I wandered all round the edges.

The trouble with reading about history of Cultural Studies is there's a lot that seems obviously very very stupid. Only it wasn't obvious at the time. And :eyeroll: at the book doesn't get the chapter read.

Plus I'm sure there's stuff obvious to me now that future me is going to :eyeroll: at, let alone future generations.

Methinks that people get a lot out of popular culture. Quite a lot of it we have to put in. I mean, I liked The Sentinel fandom, but the show only sketched in bits of what was most interesting to me in the fic. I think that happens a lot, and not just with our kind of fandom. People find stuff that is useful and valuable to them, and it doesn't have to be some author person who put it there in the first place.

The whole mass culture thing where we're like zombies absorbing everything thrown at us is just rather annoying. And unworky. Book says only 10% of music makes a profit, and only another 10% breaks even. 60% of singles never get played. Numbers like that, somebody somewhere is doing a lot of choosing. Who and why people can get in arguments about.

Marxist theory this week. Base and superstructure, economic conditions of production determining all that culture stuff up top. Is interesting, and yet also with the :eyeroll: quite often.

People are more complicated than theories about people. Sort of in general.

Am also running into random quotes make me think of Torchwood and why some relationships go crunch:

Though the bored person hungers for things to happen to him, the disheartening fact is that when they do he empties them of the very meaning he unconsciously yearns for by using them as distractions.

... okay, maybe most of the world doesn't immediately think of Torchwood and Gwen, but ANYways...

it's in a section which talks about the cultural masturbator trapped in a cycle of non-fulfilment

... and clearly this is to do with big thinking ...

I must remember to write down actual homework on bits of paper. Or send it to myself or post it in LJ or something. Otherwise it stays on the laptop, which stays in the backpack, which then surprises me come college days when I get it out and go 'oh *bleep*, that was what I meant to do...'

Of course the most unhelpful bit is that all day all I've really wanted to do is sleep. This is not helping the brain work.
