Mar. 17th, 2008 10:18 pmI read my Film Theory book (An Introduction, Robert Stam, quite good in the bits I've read so far). I say mine; it's actually the library's, and I think I need to get one of my own so I can scribble in the margins etc. At the moment there's only bent pages to indicate the really useful bits, which is kind of... I was going to say antisocial, but since whoever did it was obviously writing the same essay as me so every page I've gone to has been useful quoteage it's actually quite helpfully social, just in a not-librarian-pleasing way. But anyway: book full of bigger words than the other book I read, elaborating on theory and whizzing through all the Names so you can get really confused when they all start with B or something. The other book poked specific films, this one is all about the theorists. So far I've learned more about Brecht than I gathered when we were actually studying theatre, a whole ton of useful about Eisenstein, Vertov and Soviet montage, and a brief recap of Mulvey that quickly moved on to responses to Mulvey, which is rather a relief because I discover people have been complaining about the same bits as annoyed me pretty much since it were first writ, only with bigger words and more degrees between them. So I like this book. It's full of shiny. I think I'll buy one to color in.
Now it's time for chocolate and romance. Actually, if the book develops a plot sometime soon I'll be happier - it was shelved with the F&SF and I thought it was urban fantasy with a romance subplot, but on evidence to date it should have been over with the romances being a girl-shags-guy with a fantasy subplot. But it's still early days. With any luck once they've established the relationship something supernatural will try to kill them.
