A thought about names
Jan. 28th, 2005 11:23 pmEthan addresses Giles as Rupert, calls him Ripper for effect, and only calls him Giles when he is demon shaped and trying to kill him.
When the two of them first meet on screen we get 'Hello, Ripper' and 'You said the Ripper was long gone'. 'Hello, Ripper' is when he sent Willow away, apparently to make sure she wouldn't see or hear anything. The other is talking about an attitude, not addressing him by name. 'Ripper' is what he calls him when Buffy or the others are around to watch, or when he is being particularly Watcherly at the start of A New Man. It is a mode of address, but also a taunt, a tease. Revealing what Giles would rather keep hidden.
Rupert is what Ethan calls him when they're just talking. It is the way he addresses him in Halloween. It is what he calls him when they are drinking companionably together.
Giles is a word he only uses twice- when the Fyarl demon breaks in to his room and starts trying to kill him.
By the numbers Ripper:Rupert:Giles is 9:5:2
But each has a specific context.
