Speaking as one of the freaks... Most of the DW fandom* back when I went to DW cons** was, wait for it, (a) female and (b) lusting after one or the other of the Doctors, usually Tom Baker, as his series got the most airplay.
This guy has quite the attitude - His Fans are the Only True Fans. What's his childhood trauma? Fandom, at least over here, has always been wide-ranging and inclusive, if that makes sense. Speaking as an American heterosexual woman and second generation fan (my mom went to a DW con with me), he can come over here and bite me. [Makes rude and childish noise in his general direction]
I'm sure there were gay fans of both genders, they just weren't necessarily in the group I hung out with. There was a whole lot of slashfic; I certainly read enough of it in my day.
And by the way, I once read a crossover 4th Doctor-Trek Next Generation fic (not slash, just spoof). It was pretty funny.
