Blood Ties

Watched the first two eps of Blood Ties, the Blood Price adaptation.
I bought the Blood Ties DVDs when they first came out, in a sort of mass enthusiasm from reading all the books. Then I realised that, as with the Dresden Files, if I read them too close to watching them all I'll be able to see are the differences. So they've been on the shelf a while.
I still keep tripping on the differences.
But I think on balance they're good.
A lot of it seems to be part of turning Vicki's story into an ensemble show. It's more about the 4 of them than a story told from her pov. I can live with that. And I like Corinne already. Yeah, she got in trouble, but because of being alone and a bit too brave, which are faults I can live with. I like her dress sense. Corsets are of the good. And she has great hair.
The blindness thing... I think there should have been some great opportunities for subjective pov shots to play with light and dark and stuff, but I'm not quite sure they've gone for it. Then again, the visual style is taking some getting used to in general. I think I like it, but I also had to check I hadn't changed the settings on the TV. The colors are like COLOR and the light in the daylit scenes is really extra shiny so you understand why the police are wearing sunglasses. But the skin tones all look about right. I think. I already had to tweak settings a bit because the aspect ratio isn't the same as my TV - what's with that? Aren't TVs mostly TV shaped? - but it looks right now I've got it reset so who knows, maybe it's supposed to be TV shaped. ANYway, assuming it is on purpose, I think I like it. There's lots of contrasts to play with, stylised colors drawn from naturalistic environments, a bit of the graphic novel playing in the lighting already.
Making Henry do graphic novels works great for TV. I'm not sure the dialog entirely fit - there were some lines that would have made waaaay more sense if he were writing romance - but the use of images works great.
Henry is very, very, very pretty. Very. I mean, seriously, this guy has pretty.
I'm not sure about his voice though.
I think I hear books more than I see the characters. There's all those words. They talk in my head.
This is not the guy that was talking in my head.
I'll get over it.
I think I like the fight scenes, though there were moments of clunk in with the cool. Usually I prefer martial arts to look less like there's wires and speeding up tricks involved, but that was Vicki with the baton, so the vampire and demon fight was all tricks all the time, and I like the contrast. Fights are one area that can totally lose me. I get picky.
My main irritation thus far is the lack of subtitles on the DVDs. Really, in a show about a main character with a disability, they couldn't stretch to standard helpful stuff? Audio description would also be appropriate. Though honestly I've only seen that on BBC DVDs.
I can't decide right now if I'll be asleep or watch more episode. I go lie down and decide.
