That was *fun*.

I think this was a great kick off to a new season with a potentially new audience. I also think if everything is exactly like this they'll have lost bits I was watching for. But Torchwood does not equal everything exactly like anything, so methinks I'm pretty safe there.

Now I really want to rewatch, but I have very much tired and am awake 4 hours later than I was yesterday and my head hurts even after the painkillers and I've kind of got my eyes closed already. But I have recorded it. So I can go watch it again. As much as I want.

*happy*

*wonders where the pretty power walk with torches from the opening credits is from.*

And that "arming the human race against the future" is little bits different than he actually said in an episode. Which gives the weird impression he sits around doing voiceover for fun. Possibly while watching CCTV.

Jack + Weevil = flirty

There's moments I like in this ep, some of them even involving Owen, but watching it slowly in pieces like I do for these heavily commented on rewatch things the whole... chat up / seduction / invitation bit to Owen loses power and momentum. Like, it seems more stupid when the timing is interrupted.
Timing important.

There's stuff going on with Jack I hadn't at first noticed. Little moments.
And other stuff I had noticed, and vaguely *facepalm*ed about. But it's all consistent and with much continuity, so that part is yaay.

And the whole team gets to play, and have stuff they're good at, so that part is extra yaay.

Dark, but interesting.

So I'm having a thought, and it may need to wander around the page a bit and be repeated at some time not 0520 before it entirely makes sense.

but

A thought about 1-04, Ianto, and what is obvious inside and outside the 'verse.

And also about who is right, and when, and how.

So after that idea wandered around all over the place, my conclusion is:

It's not as obvious to Ianto.

It's a foregone conclusion to Jack.

And to the audience it depends what genre we think we're in.

From no character's value set is the final solution the ideal one, but it may be the only one they can manage with their current resources. But. I'm still not sold on that - there were possibilities not tried at all. And that makes Jack just that bit darker, and Ianto not entirely wrong at all.
beccaelizabeth: my Watcher tattoo in blue, plus Be in red Buffy style font (Default)
There isn't exactly a lot in this one that I felt the need to rewatch. Or, in fact, anything. Thus far the single most amusing part of it is the CBBC logo in the corner.

The value on first watch can come from lots of stuff, plot and shiny and all that, but on rewatch I'm looking to mine data on Team Torchwood, and it's really rather lacking. I mean, everyone seems a bit off, iirc. The whole episode seems a bit off.

Mostly it can be all Meaning Something if you reckon Eugene=Jack. Because Read more... )

So, to sum up: Ianto was pretty very very briefly
this episode was rather badly written
and I think twice is the most times I'll ever bother watching it

Okay, this is the one that annoyed me so much on a meta level I was thisclose to giving up on Torchwood. If 1-09 had been next I would have been out of there. But thankfully we got 1-08 instead, and I stayed all season.

On a meta level? This one isn't ever going to get less annoying.

But I have a half finished transcript that nobody else is picking up (does anyone else do transcripts? did I miss them?) so I have to rewatch it for that at least.

And... if I stay within the world of the show, I'm sure there's all kinds of interesting in there.

Plus it turns out to be almost the only time Tosh has a personality.

So, rewatch.

Right then: transcript for 1-07 DONE.
I'm not sure how clear it is.
There's a bit I tried to make it clear which images went with which words, and I think I ballsed it up instead.
Someone check it?

But all the words have the right people attached now.

I really hope my essay is as close to done as I think it is, because this? Ate alllll my time tonight. I only meant to watch it! Watching takes an hour, tops! Not... well, many.
*sigh*
beccaelizabeth: my Watcher tattoo in blue, plus Be in red Buffy style font (Default)
Yes, this is the one I swore I'd never ever ever watch again.
I have found it occupies quite disproportionate amounts of my brainspace. I think about it almost as much as I think about Cyberwoman. It won't go away.
So I'm going to watch it through to the end and hope that makes it finish properly.

Already I have learned that the amounts of ick have been successfully edited in my memory, so it's even more gross than I expected. Oh dear.

But there's stuff going on with Ianto which is actually interesting.

I started watching at around 1800 and here it is 2133. That's a very different way to watch. Seen all through, the tension builds in the way the writers intend, under their control. Now I have a pause button. And I'm watching shields up, fully in the know of where they're going, and with my brain on. Watching to see how it is done. I'm slightly nauseated, true, but I'm not half as freaked out. Not much freaked out at all. More fascinated by the technique, and by the character arc stuff I can pull out and isolate from the plot.

Ianto is all kinds of fun in this one.

Actually they all are.

I think I must admit, this is rather a good episode. In character, team work, roles assigned and distinct, and a whole lot of scary.

I just still feel cheated by the genre it turned out to be.

According to the online word count thingy I just used, that comes out at 5505 words.

... why is it I can't manage that many for homework?
Mind you, it would be about five-ten times too much, but.
*sigh*
beccaelizabeth: my Watcher tattoo in blue, plus Be in red Buffy style font (Default)
This one felt kind of off. I mean, every episode is so different from every other episode they could all feel off. But the character voices... there were some lines I'd have given to different characters, and others I'd rewrite now. Odd bits of knowledge and odd ways of expressing them.
Is the problem with developing characters as you go along, something has to end up the outlier.

Also I felt it kind of lost at show-not-tell. I mean it did a lot of showing, but then Jack told us all what it all meant, at some length. That was... inelegant.

I've definitely had a lot of thoughts about this before, yet I still love the episode. And watched it in that way my brother watches his videos that drives me nuts, rewinding practically every scene and watching it over and over. But there's so much to see. Watch Jack and watch Ianto and you have two complete stories.

The more I watch the less I find not to like in this ep. Which has a lot to do with Ianto.

There's a lot about Jack going on in the not exactly subtle subtext. Loyalties and people being gone and that. He manages to be a massive hypocrite at the same time as suggesting he really has switched sides. Which as shadowing on what might happen later makes it make more sense it was all about 'her' because she is gone so... There might be a so.

Okays, I have not so much to say about this that doesn't need to go in fic. So I go watch 1-05.

Yeah, all this also had a plot, but once the episode is over so is the plot, more or less. The emotions and relationships are what keeps going in the next ep.

If it were at all unusual.

... Ianto looks bloody gorgeous in a waistcoat.
I was trying to think the other day of good clothes to dress people up in, but I kind of don't want to change anything about Ianto.
Looks *very* good in a suit.

Conclusion: Most of the ep well put together. Lots of character stuff shown. Plausible reactions and a plot without horrible leaps. Nice use of genre stuff.
And yet. I think I might hate this second only to Greeks Bearing Gifts.
... maybe a large gap, more sick than rage, but still. Hate that ending.
beccaelizabeth: my Watcher tattoo in blue, plus Be in red Buffy style font (Default)
Didn't love it.
Had the sound off for most of the ep, covered up the subtitles sometimes.
Spent the whole time waiting for the trick, really.
It were too obvious, and kind of boring.
And yet at the end leaves you wondering if this is Andrew-world or consensus reality, making it feel even cheaper.

You know what I'd like to write about? Doctors, lawyers, soldiers, police, all those people who get TV series about them, but ones that just happen to also be fans. Because I get a bit tired of the lone loser stereotype.

Anyway. Didn't hate it. Just... felt like a bit of a nothing much.

Except there was one line Owen got to say to Gwen, about how they are all human actually, that I've so very been waiting for someone to say. Because she do get on her high horse a bit.

Am now looking forward to next week and some actual Team Torchwood.

always find I watch the faces more on second watch, first being more about the subtitles. bit of a drawback, I know.
ANYways

seemed to clunk even more this time. I didn't miss any plot developments, they really did change direction without any reason. And there were more points where I blinked and wondered what got cut and why, because those lines just didn't stick together, much less flow.
