pasted together panoramic 1x07 You know how sometimes they keep the camera in about the same place for ages, so you get a lot of shots around the hub that almost fit together? I fitted them together.

Starting on the left you see the stairs down, the sofa, Tosh's desk, the gap next to Tosh desk which has the start of the stairs that wrap around the fountain, the fountain, the window they use to paste things up, project pictures and draw maps on (display area), the lift, the big arch that leads up into that display area and through into the games machine and the stairs down to the interrogation room, and on the right the armoury.

that corner behind the armoury Obviously these three pictures pasted together are very different scales. On the right there's the armoury, on the left the arch back into the myseries of the far corner. Between them you can just about see a door with a light on it, I think.

The map is a bit useless because it has lines being sometimes a wall, sometimes a step, sometimes a path or bridge, and sometimes as far as I can tell a door. Plus I think there's a door/wall missing. Jack's office has two doors, but there's neither marked on the little BBC map. Also I think the lift isn't there, sort of, and of course all the different layers confuse the hell out of things. I'm trying to make a color coded by height version and it's a right rainbow already.

The ep was about taking the thing Tosh was actually glad was the same everywhere - family - and tainting it - domestic violence. Yesno? Making the universe just that much more depressing.

Family is maybe a Thing with Tosh? I mean, I said I have trouble finding her character, but we get that bit of a theme, and then who she sees in 1-13.

Canon is a bit unsatisfying for Tosh. And Ianto, much as I like him.

Mind you, if we're talking background, it's not like Owen got a hell of a lot.

Gwen got a few bits and pieces. Gwen got the most normal life stuff.



I've got a TV writing book that says not inventing backgrounds is on purpose so you've got more to explore later when you've got a whole bunch of episodes left and you're looking for ideas.

Which is all very well, but... well, for Highlander they invented but only in broad strokes, then they filled in as they went along. But because they had a skeleton in place the details pretty much pulled together.

If you don't invent a thing you're not mentioning then every writer is not mentioning a different thing and the details can be pulling every which way.


I'm not sure they invented a background to not mention, for most of Torchwood.

Which could be why I keep getting the urge to give everyone parents and everyone.

always find I watch the faces more on second watch, first being more about the subtitles. bit of a drawback, I know.

seemed to clunk even more this time. I didn't miss any plot developments, they really did change direction without any reason. And there were more points where I blinked and wondered what got cut and why, because those lines just didn't stick together, much less flow.

Other times, mostly with Jack, they were having two conversations at once. Which was rather cool.

There was no logic and it relied on telling because it had nothing to show us. That's the feeling I'm left with on second viewing.

So even without the still makes me sick specific, I don't think this one was very good.
