Watched the DVD
Everything Changes and Day One
It is possibly I've watched 1-01 just a few times too many. What with the transcript stuff I did and all. I'm getting a feeling a bit like when you're doing pancakes and the lemon is technically run out only you've got half a sugary thing left to cover.
Only not really because I don't know what the sugary thing would be. Just squished lemon.
I possibly overthink my metaphors.

If there's anything more to get out of 1-01 it is no longer apparent to me. Though I can happily stare at Ianto and Jack some more.

Ianto looks quite anxious when he's doing the computer stuff. Also, mouth breathing.

Day One
Haven't watched half as much.
Still love Jack + Sword.
Watched Ianto more carefully in light of later events...
I was thinking, the moments of clunk stand out more the more often I watch, and they do clunk quite a bit.
But.
Any clunk in early episode Ianto is actually In Character.
See he laughs real loud along with everyone else. Laughing! For realz!
...only a bit much.
But that works in character! So cool!
... or, you know, reading far too much into tiny details.

Ianto says he thinks Jack was with the CIA.
... which initials mean something in Doctor Who, yesno?
amusement.

I still think it's deeply funny that "period military is not the dress code of a straight man" - because they're sitting there with all the pieces to say 'time traveller' but instead they're blinded by sex.

The more often I watch this the more deeply unsexy most of it gets.
Except Jack kissing her. Because that was the one and only on purpose bit. And he really *kisses*.

... wanna be glowy... borrow him?

*sigh*

Jack chess knights conversations all over the place. It's never about him. He'll deflect and make it about whoever is talking to him. Gwen says the hand wasn't worth it? Jack says 'want to prove yourself'. Gwen asks a question? Jack says 'would it make you feel better'. Sidesteps and hits a button.
It isn't actually pleasant. But is effective.

Jack staring at Gwen and calling her brilliant... meh. I don't know. Can only think it's about that 'reasons to hold on' bit. Because he's just a tad bit adrift in his life. So here she is being all human and brilliant...

... and preachy and condescending and speciesist and ignorant and...
meh.

It grates even worse, knowing what she ends up doing.

All that 'forgive me' in the first episode is dead creepy matched up to later.

I was thinking, bullet hole in the forehead - recurring image of Jack throughout series, dark shadow right there. But I can only think of 1-05 and 1-11, him sleepy and him driving respectively. So possibly not so very. But... hole in the third eye place, dark shadow there later, very nice visual both ways. Not exactly ambiguous that it would kill him. So every time it is brought to mind again it's like "Jack got killed and came back, remember?"

... don't know though.

Naked Owen is not a visual I'm inclined to see again.
Though it still strikes me deliberate that the only thing left on him is the chain round his neck.

Ianto - "with my eyes" - still very cute.
... yeah, just generally cute.

Although, looking at these next to my pretty pictures from 1-12, I don't think it's just that I fancy him more later, I think he actually got prettier. And also the suits fit better. Not that they fit badly here, just better later.
... waistcoat=pretty. Too much suit hides teh pretty.

It strikes me as odd to spend so much time on Gwen coming to terms with the existence of aliens, with Gwen being all kinds of ignorant even compared to your average SF buff. We get so many shots of her reaction to Jack telling her things the audience surely already knows. I mean, do they expect people to tune in not knowing it's SF? People who've never watched DW? Do they really have to sell it to that audience? I don't know. Seems strange. Because for an audience of SF fans the identification character can't be the mundane. She isn't our way into the world of aliens. She's maybe our way into the world of twisted nobody to stop them that is Torchwood.
Maybe the alien bit is the distraction.

I still reckon it's humans = monsters as the theme.

Gwen and Carys and sex as first alien contact and sex in general and want/fear and trying for a connection but there being big messy death involved... trace it as Gwen arc and there's Stuff there.

Alien gets inside you also = theme.

All done. Either I need to sleep or watch more episodes.

Sleep is adviseable but it's all I've done all day/week/month and I'm rather fed up of it.
