Okay, since my First of the Google harvest entry now won't save the edits, I'm starting part the second. I suspect the non-saving has more to do with how much else my computer is doing than with LJ, but anyways-

I found a bunch of stories by googling "Ethan Rayne"
To be clear- I'm focusing on these as Ethan fics. If they are technically excellent in every way and yet not really Ethan fics, I will probably miss the excellent and just say 'not Ethan'. This is probably unfair, but is more useful to fellow Ethan fans.

I think it is one of those where half a mailing list appears in a story, but can't be sure, because not a list I've been on. Just... the behaviour is somewhat familiar.
parts of this made me lol. But the actual plot is on crack. Seriously. Could not be more insane if it tried. Which seems to be the point, so well done them.



There was a rec for the potentially interesting 'Playground' series, about the gang when they were kids, but none of the links work. It was supposed to include one about Ethan. Might hunt that down some time.

eta: or were. I just went to look again and can't find a single bit of it. It is possible I'm just looking in the wrong place, but I clicked all the links.

Starts when Ethan is 13 and Giles is 18. I'm reading them, but once he's that young he isn't Ethan to me. And that isn't an age I particularly want to read about, especially in romance. Way the hell too young. Plus the guys make me :facepalm: enough when they're, well, 50ish, or 21 like canon says. Even younger? *very, very worried*
The first section is all Ethan pov. Only way I can read it. If it was older pov attracted to a 13 year old that would be purely creepy.
It doesn't give updates on his age. Not helpful. But if it sticks with canon Ethan could only be 16 by the time of the Eyghon thing, when Ripper leaves. Which would make him seriously underage up until then. And the whole 'creepy and abusive' thing is just anti-fun when one of them is a kid. Also I find it difficult to believe in forever love starting at age 13, so I'm just not getting my G/E goodness out of this story, however plausible it may be.
And I just read a section where either they missed the punctuation and ended a section quite abruptly or there was a bit missing. I really can't tell.
Warnings that should be on it- the G/E is plainly an abusive relationship sometimes. Ripper is basically a jerk most of the time. And someone rapes Ethan. And, as I've said at length, all this happens while Ethan is under age even in Britain.
Warnings that are on it - This fic also deals with a subject matter that some may find upsetting, so if that's a problem for you, avoid the chapters entitled "The Carnival" and "Of Human Bondage". Contains mild swearing, sex (m/m, m/f) drug use, cross dressing, dark magic/demon worship and general breaking of laws.
Said warning would be more helpful if it was in chapters with titles. Which it isn't, far as I can see.
The last couple of sections deal with after the Eyghon incident, which could be interesting, but it also seems to wander into crossover territory, with Rumpole defending them in court. And then Ethan goes shopping in Diagon Alley. Which was when I gave up.

There are also harry potter fics in the same folder. Or possibly crossovers. Either way, no. Not reading them.

Y'all have to know why I have trouble with this characterisation.
On the other hand if they'd stayed out of his head and just had him offer the same deal, I'd have no problem with it. It fits with the way he hid behind the Slayer when Eyghon was after them. It is a sneaky way of getting her help. And sneaky is Ethan.
Ambiguity. Always my favourite thing.
This intro is not ambiguous. Ethan the very bad guy.
And the first section has him following through on the offer.
I'm not going to finish reading this. Not my Ethan.

First in a section where I can't tell if it is meant to be a summary or a story, which concludes with Giles and Ethan being lovers again, without actually showing anything about how it happens. Then he appears as part of Giles&Ethan the exposition team. Not an Ethan fic.
Also, the story is in this strange tiny frame in shades of brown on brown, which really doesn't make it easy to read.

Two fics in script format. Ethan appears in both. In the second he gets vamped and possibly staked. I skimmed. In the first one apparently he stabs Giles and wanders off with a smile. I skimmed even quicker.
I have trouble with script format because it doesn't go in my head the same way a regular story does. So I'm not really reading these two. Stuff happens, my brain wants there to be more words around it, I move on. They might be good stories but scripts don't work for me.

I read this section and it seems to be all setup. Tells a lot of what is up in that 'verse. But I don't think I'm going to get any of the stuff I'm looking for in this fic, if it is all demons and darkness, so I'm not reading it. It might be a good story, it might have a 3D Ethan, but the 'verse is too far from canon for me to start in on it.

And then the woman makes a big drama out of the revelation and it turns out to be... Giles!

WIP that adds Spike to more of A New Man.
Myself I feel the only way A New Man could be improved is if they actually showed the sex.
This story instead takes away the parts where Ethan actually does something helpful or sneaky, has him tell Spike a whole list of things that he could do even with the chip but apparently is too dumb to think of himself, and so far has Ethan interact with Giles only for exposition.
