Ianto Jones as a GURPS character
Feb. 13th, 2009 11:19 pmIanto Jones:
Skills:
Acting defaults off Performance or Performance off Acting, 1 skill point invested somewhere.
Acting is the art of long term deception, Performance is the kind of acting you'd be able to study openly.
Area Knowledge 2
Cardiff, London, Wales, and wherever Ianto was born are all possibilities. Defaults between different areas are useful.
Brawling is at default, along with guns, and whatever skill the stun gun uses. He's got familiarities with different sorts of guns, that takes 8 hours each, but he hasn't skill points, they take 100 hours intensive training at least.
Carousing 1 - the art of partying. because he was a student.
Climbing 1 I don't know why I see him climbing
Computer Operation/TL8 4 because all the other skills use it so its hard to justify less.
Cooking (beverage making) 2 skill points and an optional specialisation to make it easier.
Current Affairs/TL8 (Cardiff) 1
this is for checking the news and knowing what's going on in an up to the minute way
Driving/TL8 (Automobile) 2 with SUV familiarity as well as whatever his personal car was.
Torchwood specialist equipment needs at least one speciality of Electronics Operation, but I can't figure if it would be TL8 or TL8+1 for the Torchwood variant tech.
1 point so far
Erotic Art (Human) 1 ... well, he's been dating Jack how long?
see also Sex Appeal 1
Escape 1 This is for ropes and handcuffs and stuff.
Forgery/TL8 He helps make alternate identities. Might that be a special computer operation though?
Hidden Lore (Torchwood) 4+ This has serious skill points, and more added all the time.
History (Britain) 4 Because you have to specialise and I have no idea which he'd choose.
Housekeeping 2 points... well it covers the kind of general work he does for TW3
Intelligence Analysis / TL8 1
for those times Ianto pulls random facts out the ether. for evaluating sources.
Literature 4 Same skill points as History because joint honors.
Poetry, because you can't get through a lit degree without writing one, and it's just amusing.
Research/TL8 4 at least, as many points as Lit and History. More from TW1.
Running. 1 Because they're Torchwood, and they do a lot of that.
Speed reading combines well with Eidetic Memory
Stealth. 1 Because he's Ianto the ninja butler librarian.
Swimming 1 Because I know exactly why I can see him swimming.
Typing defaults off many of his other skills at really nice numbers. He can type.
Writing. 2 For reports, and also for making up nice cover stories.
Did I miss any obvious ones? Include ones I shouldn't?
It doesn't mean much without more GURPS rules math. Reckon his IQ and DX are above average bordering on exceptional, say 12 DX and 13 IQ. Then it takes little time to have great skills, since 12 or 13 gives a 75% or 84% chance of success on an unmodified skill test.
I tried to put this all in GURPS character builder but it ate some of it and then crashed, so that part worked less well.
Advantages I'd give him include Common Sense, Eidetic Memory and one of the ones that mean he takes things in stride, Unfazeable like the best butlers.
Disadvantages would include the Torchwood standard extremely hazardous duty that almost always happens. More personal ones I think would be strong Sense of Duty to the people he feels are important. Maybe some disads of mild PTSD as well.
I'd aim for a final points total more 'hero in training' than full on superhero. We have Jack for that. Figuring out his point total is going to be spectacular.
