BFA 29 The Chimes of Midnight
Feb. 27th, 2009 05:31 pmI had heard from lots of places that this was a really good one.
... do you ever feel like someone reversed the polarity when you were little, so now you're back to front of most everyone else? I get that feeling a lot.
I liked the setup. I liked the resolution. I got really, really bored in the middle.
It's a time loop plot where the point is that things keep happening that are pretty much the same. And it's filled with characters where the point is that they're not properly people, they're a few catchphrases repeated over and over, a role entirely described by their job title, and a weird lack of reaction to circumstance. All these things are Clues. But the problem is there's not a whole lot of distance between not being properly people because it's a Clue and just being rather rubbish characters.
Also, it seems to think something is a surprise when I thought it was so obvious I hadn't thought of an alternative. "Edward Grove is alive" is supposed to be obscure? Clearly my brain is too SF because I just jumped to something it took the characters another two parts to figure out.
The stuff that's specific to Charley's character is interesting.
And the Chimes device made for some lovely tense moments, with fun use of passage of time between chimes.
But mostly? I got bored.
Oh, also? The time loop repeating? Made it really difficult to notice when my stupid MP3 player played the last part instead of the second bit of the 4th episode. It was the only part that was out of place and I was already a bit fed up of the story by then so it wasn't that as made my impression of it, but it really didn't help.
It's possible I just don't like time loop stories. But I think if the characters were people with backgrounds to discover and something interesting happened in all the loops I might. As it was the only interesting happened to Charley, and I got bored waiting for the next bit.
I guess I like the blowing things up stories better.
*sigh*
