The Matrix world, with linked brains running a simulation, could be a world of every kind of magic, as long as the mage can get enough brainspace to design and run their changes. That would mean small powers from total concentration, and larger powers from cooperation, or stealing other people's time. With that as the setup there's logic behind a sort of religious setup with demons, who steal and corrupt, and higher powers, who accept only what is freely given, with a few monks who rely only on their own expanding awareness. That would interlace with whatever the world was like outside the Matrix, which would not involve squid robots or a war with AI but could involve boring repetitive work for necessary maintenance. But boring repetitive work is also exactly the sort of thing that frees up mind space for other things, for demons to use brains while they're not busy, so are they ever actually outside the Matrix? And is the Matrix really outside the Cosmos, when it resembles the Sleeper setup so much?
