new year dream

today the upstairs noise has nothing to do with music. There are builders in. Or at least people who bash stuff around and have buildery conversations on the front steps. Mostly I've stayed asleep but been subliminally aware of them.
Today I had this big complicated Dr Who dream that turned out to be a Buffy crossover when I found Ethan. It was like the biggest New Year party of all time - literally, there were people there from every time. Ethan was in the crowd of actual romans, celebrating Janus (which activity I managed to crash, cartwheeling through in front of them while they were all bowing to Janus. Bowing to me! Chaos giggly me!). He had half his face painted grey, like a statue. That made something in my mind click and I painted half my face red. Whatever I was using was shiny, and had an unfortunate tendency to try and cover the other half too... But then I could see the exit, and actually reach it, instead of running between zones getting in progressively more trouble.
See painting your whole face is a mask, subsuming your identity under this construction. But painting only half doesn't hide your other self, it just gives you options.
There was more dream, with this thing called a Death Speaker that had vines for a face and was trying to pass judgement on all assembled. The 7th Doctor grabbed a microphone and gave a speech, about how people try and divide the world into black and white, draw a line down the middle and think it is simple. But even a simple line drawing (a large gold Seal of Rassilon) isn't really like that. We might see it in two dimensions, but really we are looking down on a globe. And then of course there is time.
I don't really know what that speech was all about but it was cool right then.
And then we broke up the party by hitting the fire alarms, and the TARDIS (which is what all the party was in, city sized and pieced together) had exits correlating with each time zone, and let everyone out. Except of course some new sidekicks.
But I (who by this point was also the Doctor) met Ethan again, and tried to find out which of the available forms he most wanted to spend time with. (He chose the 9th. It was fun.)
Dreams? Freaky.
