actually the gooey-drowning dream was a bit more interesting. There was a Giles, but not our Buffyverse Giles, an alternate where he wasn't allowed back in to be a Watcher because of his boyfriend, so he went into science instead. All the scientists thought he was wierd, because of the believing in magic and demons and stuff. And he lived with his grandma, who was ancient, but still walked him home from work every day and didn't let him out of the house except to go to work. Kind of like in Frighteners. And Giles had a whole row of cremated people ashes on his mantelpiece. His mum and dad, of course, and also most of his friends from the Eyghon incident.
The dream did not feature Ethan. Grandma would not have approved of Ethan. But at least Ethan wasn't on the shelf.
So, science!Giles had discovered a new life form in a swimming pool. Technically, a new life form that was the water in the swimming pool. Someone had been using it for quantum computing experiments. It made readouts in shiny light, but unidirectionally, so nobody could see what it was saying to anybody else. It liked Giles. Giles was swimming in it when it achieved consciousness. I think it fancied Giles.
The scientists that invented it did not believe it was a life form. Just a very liquidy computer.
Giles knew it was alive and didn't like the idea of being chopped up and carted off and used however they wanted. So he was all talking to it with his hands in the water, communing. And then it decided to come with him instead. So it went sort of Abyss and flowed up his arm and hid under his clothes.
This worked less well than it hoped because a swimming pool full of water does not actually fit in everyday work clothes, even a lab coat.
But it went sort of plastic-y and stuck to him and he could walk at least a large part of it home.
And then canon!Buffy turned up, because she had just landed in an alternate universe and annoyed the Slayer (a black girl who didn't believe she was the Slayer too, but not Kendra) so of course Giles was the guy to talk to about that, but this Giles wasn't a Watcher.
The dream lacked resolution. Kind of got stuck on the drowning in goop thing. I think the swimming pool didn't really grasp the concept of breathing and loved Giles very much and wanted to be all everywhere with him. You know, including lungs.
Maybe then it would merge with him and he'd be all pool!Giles.
Or, you know, dead. Which would suck.
I kind of can't see our canon!Giles going scientist. It doesn't seem like his style. Too... practical? Mucking around with experiments instead of nice proper books. But he did do much practical demonology, so *shrugs*
