Great Expectations
Sep. 27th, 2006 08:54 pmI have started reading Great Expectations.
I have read the first nine chapters so far.
It has a story. Things happen, and then more things happen. I want to know what happens next.
Yaays!
... because this is by no means guaranteed in a set text.
It took a couple of chapters to get the hang of the voice of it, and the way the sentences don't ever want to quit. And the non standard spelling... I know why it is there, but the compulsive proofreader in me is not liking it at all.
But I like the story.
I have not read it before, or seen any of the TV adaptations. It is possible this makes me weird. I have picked up tiny pieces by osmosis or something, for some bits are familiar to me, but not familiar as being part of this story, if that makes any sense.
I stopped on chapter nine because I need to get some sleep soon.
Also it had some good sense near the end of it.
"you must be a common scholar afore you can be a oncommon one"
start small and build, sort of thing.
I'm reading it a bit sideways to the discussion it is part of, because I'm not thinking class the same way, just the studying kind. But one does have to start off with the A and learn through to Z before one can manage the rest.
I'm feeling a bit more of a beginner than I like right now, because new subject, that I haven't touched for many years. But the point of an intro class is in fact starting from the beginning, so I'll get there eventually.
I was also thinking I was missing bits of the code... can't remember which type it is, but the one that says all the class indicators in it, the meaning of the bits of things described. But now Pip is starting to worry about things they get noticed and told as being common or not, and a sort of framework emerges along with his perceptions. Neat.
Tomorrow, more classes. I think she said we'd be doing the introduce ourselves thing then. I made a note to maybe dig out one of my name badges, because it might look daft but in a class of thirty it can't hurt. But now I can't remember where I stashed them.
Shall also get student ID tomorrow, I rather hope. If the computer is working again by then.
I like the book we have to read for the next month. yaays!
