okay, so probably time, food, drink, chocolate, and lying in the dark for a few hours cures headaches, but it was much less boring than usual cause I listened to Doctor Who and it distracted me until I only just remembered I had a headache before. :-)

I finished listening to Kingdom of Silver. New 7th Doctor audio adventure. I haven't listened to any 7 audios yet. I was quite confuzzled where to start. This one has him travelling around on his own and if there's any continuity type stuff I didn't... oh, wait, the Orion war and androids thing, that was in the 8th Doctor audios I already listened to. But that happened later to him so it isn't continuity stuff exactly. Um, confusions.
Kingdom of Silver has Silver in the title so you know who the bad guys are even without the picture on the front. That's okay, they're nicely menacing anyway. And there's lots of running around and mistaken identity and politics and people with interesting voices to make a good story with.
People with interesting voices are quite essential in audios. And good looking voices. I mean, I don't know what the android dude looked like, but he sounds good looking.
... how does that work anyway? Voices make pictures in our heads. That's kind of weird when you think about it.
*looks on back of CD*
*googles*
Hang on, Neil Roberts? As in Starfury conventions? Er, yes, I know he's done other stuff, but I think I've only seen him on TV in his tapes he brings to conventions.
Huh.
I wonder if he's in the CD extras. I didn't put them on my MP3 player, cause then I'd have to fiddle about and skip things on the bus.
ANYway
What I meant to be saying is
7 has a good voice for audios.
Distinctive. Has fun with words.

I liked Kingdom of Silver.

I very a lot liked Keepsake, the bonus one part adventure. It's a bit Sci Fi and a bit action and a bit romantic and a bit sad. Short and shiny. And not episode shaped at all. I like doing different things with the existing toys. Hence the fanfic read/writing.

After that I listened to Blood of the Daleks, both parts.
I wasn't going to do that cause it means I listened to quite large amounts of money today, but I wasn't asleep and they were on the player, and I couldn't stop in the middle cause there were Daleks and everything.
Adventure! Excitement! Finally finding out how the Doctor met Lucie, who I've been listening to for an audio season already cause I started with 2.1
I like how they don't like each other at all. It's fun.

So now it's past midnight and I've done as much listening to Doctor Who today as I have college lessons.
On balance, cool.

Does anyone else listen these? Any suggestions for more systematic listening? I have the rest of the 8th Doctor season to listen to (yaay) but beyond that I just gave up and grabbed two at random. Any recs? Anti-recs?

I also have a heap of DVDs I haven't watched yet, which you'd think would be a priority, but I can't watch on the bus or in the dark, or when I don't think my brain is working. I don't mind if the bus is too loud for a bit on the audios. DVDs though are Serious. :eyeroll:

happy and not headachey. Yaay!

... just found myself contemplating how to make an 8th Doctor icon from one of these CD covers or something... I mean, look at the whole absence of Doctor icons, and which do I want? 8!

I read The Knight's Tale.

I also unexpectedly got a couple more hours sleep. Because I was horizontal and warm. And then the clock beeped the hour and oh look, six o'clock.
*facepalm*

The Knight's Tale: Very long. Very, very long. Long. And incredibly boring.
So there's these two dudes who get locked up in a tower and they fall in love with a woman they see out the window and instead of being Best Friends they get all jealous and hate each other. One of them gets out of the tower and leaves and gets really ill and comes back disguised as someone who isn't a Knight. This cunning disguise works, so he can stand right in front of people who knew him for years and they don't recognise him. Because he's not a Knight. Because Knights wouldn't dress up as menials. I was all *facepalm* and :eyeroll: there. So, anyway, he sneaks back so he can be a menial servant to his lady love. And not so he can break his best friend out of jail at all. So a couple years later his best friend breaks himself out of jail. But instead of running away he hides and finds out his friend is there and in love with the same lady he has been staring at out of the window who of course Should Be His, so he gets all angry and they agree to fight about her. Only then the guy who held them captive turns up while they're fighting about her. He's going to kill them for being broken out of jail and still in his garden, which seems fair. But the ladies are all crying about it so instead he says they should come back with a hundred knights each and have a big fight about it and whoever wins gets to marry the girl. Who has never met either one of them before. And did I mention they were both in jail? That's a prize match that is.
So then there's a break while they build the theatre for the tournament, and some temples. You know those bits in some vampire books where they take a time out from the action to describe, in detail, what the party room looks like, what everyone is wearing, what the weapons are, and what they're wearing some more? Yeah. Exactly like that. Only then it goes on to describe what the temples are wearing, and symbolic though I'm sure every word is, I am not at all surprised I fell asleep. Blasted thing made getting ready for a big fight boring.
So then one of the guys prays to Venus that he should get the girl and he don't mind about winning, and the other guy prays to Mars that he should win the fight, thinking he'll get the girl, and the girl prays to Diana the goddess of virgins that could she please not be won? Please? Was perfectly happy without husband kthxbye. But sadly Diana turns up to say the other two gods are having a fight about it but one of them will be winning, sorry, no more virginity for you.
So the next day the guy who prayed to Mars wins the fight but gets a slow mortal wound when his horse chucks him on his victory lap, which is what you get for showing off, obviously. And the girl is all sad about this and so he very briefly and without any of that mucky stuff gets the girl. And dies. And the guy who lost then gets the girl, because once someone is supposed to get the girl you can't have a girl flapping around un-got, even if she didn't fancy getting married and is now the consolation prize for the loser. So they get married.
The End.

So basically? Two guys start out as best friends, fall out because of a woman, have a big fight, one wins and dies, one loses and gets the girl, isn't love a funny thing.

It takes so many pages.

And I don't know if it's the translation or the actual Chaucer but I'm heartily sick of the stupid poetry.
Also the stupid way you have to say the words so the rhymes rhyme. They always look the same, but they don't sound the same in Norfolk.

I can see why we're studying this Tale. It goes with the Greek stuff. The story is theoretically about Theseus and a couple of dudes from Thebes, and the girl they fall in love with is Emily, the slightly less famous little sister of Hippolyta. So it's kind of greek. Just in a weird and updated way.

... yes, we're leaving exactly this kind of *facepalm* for our descendents in our pop culture.

So, anyway, bored now, but have done the reading.

This morning I dreamed most (at least) of Neil Gaiman's Endless.
Dream and Death were only there by implication. I was asleep, and in the dream people died.
You only meet Death again that one time, so I am content with that.
The others though turned up one at a time, slightly different from the comics but all the more real for that.
And I've realised, this Worries me. I find myself ever less convinced of the existence of most gods and goddesses. They're interesting, but they're stories. Probably. And yet I dream about these characters who a comic book writer almost certainly made up, and here I am feeling like I should be Very Very Quiet until the beings too large for a mortal life shift their attention elsewhere.

Stories have power.

(Destiny was on a key fob, burnt onto a piece of wood shaped like a tombstone or a large arched door. Desire led me along until I saw Immortals, beautiful and eternal, escorting one of their number to a play he had written. I sat one row away, and rubbed my Watcher tattoo, and wanted.)
(Of Delirium and Despair I try not to talk. But they were there.)

(I looked up the Endless and remembered Destiny is chained to the book, and if one of the Endless dies a new aspect of them takes over. Suddenly a key shaped like a tombstone is a Story of itself.)

I've finished rewatching all the DW episodes with Mickey in that I have on DVD
so I just finished watching Doomsday with the Daleks and Cybermen.

Mickey has such an interesting story but it happens around the edges and behind the others. They gave him a proper background and motives and stuff just when they were ready to send him away. This logic I do not understand.

I think knowing how Rose is going to spend her time in Pete's World kind of totally borks the emotion in the ending to season 2. Read more... )

I have plot bunnies for Torchwood scripts with Mickey mixed in there. I think I can say stuff with him, use his background, get new perspectives that you can't get with a newbie. I think he's got the potential to be a really great character.
