Shakespeare bein funny
May. 17th, 2009 11:16 pmI watched 'Much ado about nothing', the Branagh version, mostly because I couldn't get his Hamlet out the library cause someone didn't bring it back.
I had remembered the Beatrice & Benedick bits. They sparkle, all glittery sharp edges. Terrible to live with but hilarious to watch.
I had quite forgotten all the rest of it, and indeed on rewatching find it at best forgettable, at worst really quite creepy. All the bits with Dogberry were unbearably tedious, I ended up fast forwarding through them.
Keanu Reeves was amusing. And really Not Subtle.
I liked the costumes. The guys in waistcoats and leather trousers were a bit win, specially with those coats of just the right length and convenient panel tails.
There's themes in here rather like we've been studying up on in Hamlet. Seems, appearance and reality not matching, surveillance, spying and misunderstanding what they spy on being central, and the general unfaithfulness of women, real or alleged. There's quite a lot as well about the being a bastardness of men, which in this one seems to balance things out a bit.
I really, really, need to get on with doing my assignment.
... one more play first? Maybes?
... I going to fail of being too interested...
