Strong Female Characters

I started reading 'On Basilisk Station' by David Weber. It's free on Baen books. Which is good because it was paper I'd probably throw it at something about now. The bit where the main character is a woman in charge of a spaceship is the appealing bit. I found that bit promising. Yet I've been avoiding reading this series for some time. I've been sticking with female authors in the hopes of avoiding some of the more annoying tropes. But hey, free book, how bad can it be?
