Does anyone know anywhere, apart from AO3, where one could find Romeo and Juliet fanfic?
It's for class. 'Textual Transformations' is being taught by someone who had not heard of fanfic, until I mentioned it yesterday. Now she says we will look at it in class.
R+J and any other adaptations of Shakespeare's play also acceptable canons.
Plus we're supposed to be gathering adaptations to add to the ones we've had listed for class, because there's a bazillion things based on Romeo and Juliet.
We will be studying:
Brooke’s Romeus and Juliet
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo + Juliet.
Zefirelli’s Romeo and Juliet
Lloyd Kaufman’s Tromeo and Juliet (the bits that can be shown to students)
shortened versions by The Reduced Shakespeare Company, and in the ‘Animated Tales’ series.
ballets by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev.
manga versions of R&J
West Side Story
Shakespeare in Love
David LaChapelle’s promotional video version for H&M.
ItaliaspeedTV - Alfa Romeo Giulietta TV advert, Italy (featuring Uma Thurman)
Dire Straits - Romeo and Juliet
... we're supposed to watch a lot of these on YouTube or by getting the videos out the college library.
So far we did a couple of lessons on theory and watched a video about how Shakespeare has been rewritten, adapted, used for political purposes, and pretty near deified, then torn down and done modernist, over the centuries since his death. Although right after he died people thought he wasn't funny and went off him until people started rewriting it with happier endings.
... there was a clip of King Lear with a happy ending.
... see this is why I'm happy we're transforming Romeo and Juliet, cause if it was one of the plays I actually like I would shudder all the time.
the video only went up to 1994 and had a bunch of bits from Conservative MPs in it so the world has moved on a teensy bit since then.
The teacher will also be going to see Gnomeo and Juliet. Partly for academia, partly for her granddaughter.
... we wait to see if we shall end up studying it...
