I'm watching the Sarah Connor Chronicles dvd sets this weekend. It's doing some really interesting stuff psychologically, much more complex than the stompy movies. It's not about metal trying to kill us, it's about what happens to minds who believe metal is trying to kill us, and increasingly what happens in the minds of the metal that makes them try to kill. Kill or be killed and what it takes to narrow a mind to those options. It's about feeling suicidal and PTSD and living the war even in the moments there's no noticeable war going on. It's about mothers and children both becoming what they need to be to survive that permanent conflict, to become the soldier and the maker of soldiers. And it's really really interesting, not just about individual soldiers but something around the edges about what happens to a society that frames everything in terms of war, be it on metal, drugs, terror, or specific countries. There's been a whole lot of war for a very long time, and not much time at peace. It makes a dent. Makes us become something we maybe don't want to be.

Watching it side by side with Dollhouse makes me feel the connections. Psych stuff. About what we're making of ourselves and each other, rewriting ourselves to fit the situation, rewriting others. Rewriting the whole world eventually.

Also both shows are pre-apocalyptic with flashforwards. It's much more interesting to me than Survivors or Outcasts. When it's set after the fall, all people can do is survive on scraps. These things right on the edge of falling, they're people dancing on the knife edge, only sometimes knowing it. Writers get to say more about cost and loss and what precisely is the source of the danger, and also more about what we can do to fix it, to avoid that fall. More variety of response, and with room to hope and to build. Better.

I have not yet seen all of T:tSCC, cause Virgin 1 changed the time and my box stopped recording it. So I get to worry about the ending for four more discs.
