You know I got home all tired at about 3pm and said 'tired now, sleeping'? Well that didn't work, so I picked up a book.
... it is now about three am and I just finished the book.

So, that worked then.

And I think I liked the ending. Read more... )

I like the Dresden Files for all the strong women, Murphy and the Sidhe women and all. They're strong like *thump* and strong like having their own agendas.
I might dislike the Dresden Files for the hell they put women through, but Harry always goes through worse, so *shrugs*

It's still closest to the urban fantasy detective stories I wanted out of some of the female point of view books I've read, but most of them turned into paranormal romance or got really creepy without noticing it, so not so good.

So I liked Changes. But I think I'll wait for the paperback on the next one. I'm not urgently rushing to go grab it.

I dreamed that the Time Lords, at the end of the war, wanted to be Remembered, like the Doctor was Remembered, because anything Remembered is never entirely gone. So they needed a very smart person, so they would remember a lot, and an imaginative person, who knows and tells stories so they'll bring them to mind, and someone who has travelled in time. And they'd need them to be someone the Doctor would never destroy. And they'd need them to volunteer. Things stuffed in unwanted get repressed, it's what you've always been trying to find out that gets called up again.

So they got Zoe. And they brought her to Gallifrey, and gave her back her memories, and made sure she had a good look around and saw the Matrix and the assembled Time Lords. And then they sent her home.

And sent the Cybermen after her.

She heard them coming and remembered them too but there was nowhere to run, and she was no longer a runner. So they grabbed her by both arms and kept on marching, dragging her along with them, into the cyber conversion chamber. And all she could do is scream 'DOCTOR!'

It was her last word.

But the Cybermen retrieved every scrap of data from her mind. They had plenty of room to store it all. And they passed it all on, every bit of it, especially the useful bits about Time Lords and Gallifrey and where their enemy the Doctor came from. Every last cyberman needed to know that, and that included those who had travelled across time and space and between universes. The Doctor had been trying to destroy them for so long, and they'd both run away and hunted in every way they ever could learn. They were happy with all this new knowledge. They made sure it was easy to retrieve.

Things that you remember can come back. All the things, including the nightmares. Including what the nightmares remember.

And you can't remember the Doctor without remembering the monsters.

Which is all a bit abstract from Zoe's point of view. Like I dreamed. From there all she knew was the Time Lords gave her back all these wonderful dreams... and then the metal marched in and their machine cut.
