Ignorant subtitles
Jun. 7th, 2011 11:17 amI am watching Wrath of Khan recorded off the TV, and I'm just having to take a moment to *facepalm*
There's a line subtitled 'To the last and we grapple with hate'
which, (a) grammar??? and (b) do they not know their quotes? I mean, granted, I know it primarily as a Wrath of Khan quote, but I can recognise a Moby Dick intertext in Khan without having actually read Moby Dick ... er, again, probably from other Star Trek but that's not the point.
The point is, a quick lookup with google gets the whole quote Khan is about to do:
"to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee."
But people relying on subtitles aren't going to know that, cause whoever did the subs has not the knowing.
I don't know what it takes to get in to subtitles as a career but I keep on thinking I should do it. I can hear things as long as I can back up a few times and check. And some of these things really need a fan with a bit of context to get things right. Earlier manglings of Star Trek tech I kind of expect, but somehow it's more depressing when it's quotes.
... okay, I think I just spent ten minutes on this, I'm over it now.
