And once again I'm left wondering when I last did a backup

My big desktop computer isn't doing anything when I try and turn it on. It did for a bit, I put some music on, and then while I was hanging up laundry it just... stopped. The fan goes, the power light is on, but nothing else happens.

So, that's... a problem.

I shall have to take it to the big computer shop. Which is not a big shop, it's the shop that fixes and/or makes the big computer. But first I need to check if said shop still exists, because shops have a tendency to not always exist.

On the plus side I have this computer and the netbook. Neither of which really do all the things I'd want them to, hence existence of big computer, but they're an epic improvement on being computerless. *touch wood*

I mostly use the big computer for playing music and Doctor Who audios and online TV stuff. So I don't know when I backed it up, but I do know I have it all on CDs and can download from Big Finish again. Except for whatever Firefox was doing that I put in a notepad txt file ready to copy for other computers yesterday. ... no I didn't promptly copy it across as I'd planned, that would be helpful and efficient, what do you take me for?

*sigh*

I think the most recent backup includes the emails, but there's also the problem that the big computer was where some of these things get backed up to.

For such a long term computer user you'd think I'd be better at it.

Ugh.


Monday is hereby designated Get Things Fixed Day.
Which is like Contact People Day but probably with more taxis to take computers to places.

Superheroines

I made a new year's resolution to write 1000 words per day, just to get started doing any writing at all again. So far I've made them by complaining about Big Finish Audios, but to listen to more of those I'd have to change devices, so, I need some topics to ramble on about.

Today: Designing female superheroes.

I guess if I'm going to invent or design a female superhero, for one thing I'll make them in a set so they've got other powerful women to relate to, and for another what I'll really be trying to do is remake or rescue existing supers. Because what I really want for those women has, sometimes, happened. Paradise Island and Amazons and a competition to find the best and Wonder Woman comes to man's world, trying to live up to her mother, and inspires women everywhere, including two more Wonder Girls. Batgirl takes up the mantle of her own will, and so does Batgirl and Batgirl after her. Black Canary and her daughter Black Canary. Oracle. Power Girl. Fire and Ice. They've all had their moments where they were exactly what I wanted, needed, them to be.

I'd want to take all the best bits of that, and then, somehow, I'd want to make sure they never got screwed over again.

... to invent lady superheroes the way I want them, I would have to combat systemic sexism in the media.

... which inventing them right would be only a small step towards doing.

I'm only on part 18/28 but I'm honestly at a loss as to why I'd want to keep listening.
... well okay, I'd listen to Paul McGann read the phone book, I should just admit that.
But seriously, these stories have Issues, ugly issues that keep putting Charley in ugly situations.
