team I 'invented' yesterday will not work unless I find a hook.
something to get me interested.
... in fanfic that's usually who is shagging who.
... in the endless Mary Sue daydreams it's that and attempts to rule and/or found the world.
clearly everyone else would want to watch that too.

so the fighty lady can have an enemy fighter lady and a will they / won't they that's pretty quickly 'will' but then they have to sort out the world so they can stop being on opposite sides.

and the (late) teens guy can have a crush on the medic guy. who has an ongoing sort of thing with the protagonist lady. neither of whom are immune to the charms of their younger team mates.

... now it's interesting. *facepalm*

the elder has a very long term and happy marriage, and her husband has a job like decorator or designer or something aesthetic and nice. he makes things pretty for her to come home to and is a generally inoffensive guy. in a fight he can hide behind particularly solid bits of furniture. and he's always been supportive of her career, just a bit vague about it.
they're probably secretly kinky.

right, now I just need to figure out what worlds they're trying to rule in what contexts.
that needs a genre and a plot and so forth.

I am so very bored. I tried reading a book but it is boring. I tried playing on the internet but it is boring. so I tried turning on the big computer, the one that in theory has all the games in but in practice has been borked so it won't connect to the internet to tell the games they're allowed to be played. I figured, maybe it would fix itself! Or I could play one and find it works! But nooooo.

Blue screen, and now black. It does nothing. It has the power and the fan noise but no other activity whatsoever.

which was exactly what I sent it in to be fixed of approximately three attempts to use it ago.

It is huge and useless and annoying and I don't even know if it has data in that I haven't backed up because I think there's a back up but who even knows?

So now it is super boring AND requires further work.

And my options for getting it fixed are the place who failed to fix it last time, sending it back kind of sort of almost functioning, or the place that previously epic borked it to the point I swore off them, but have probably had a complete staff change since then.

Or maybe I could just buy a new one. But I don't know if I have the money for that. It depends on if I'm spending it on a house in six months time. which depends on if that plan is even remotely likely to work. which depends on factors unknown to me, so I just have to wait.

And until then, what to do?

When I thought I was moving to Norwich I was waiting to see what computer shops there are in Norwich. And I could still do that, but I'd have to take my large desktop computer in to Norwich on the bus, which isn't terribly likely to be helpful.

the netbook computer has access to most of the... well, some of the same games, but I was playing them when it had the overheating problem and had to be sent back for repairs, and that was ages ago. I haven't so much as plugged the netbook in for months because it's only for going places and doing things and hey, I didn't do that for... two years now.

wow I need things to do.

the lack of things is just... nope, no, can't keep doing this.

need a plan.

Current book seems to be mostly about the illegitimacy of female power. It doesn't seem to have noticed. A lot of stories do this though, including ones that make women the bad guys without making them actually bad. Arthurian stories are the worst at that.

This book is being really annoying. Every authority figure is male. There's one female sorceress, and she uses the power of sex. She ensnares men's minds and then kisses them to death. And really, who needs magic to do that? Knives are traditional. But no, she has super sexy magic. And no actual sex, because death. Also she might maybe possibly be a slave of demons? Her magic collar doesn't have a way to take it off, that's vaguely slave seeming.

There's another female character, currently a child, and it seems like she's going to use the power of feelings? She's an empath. And thus far characterised by her utter faith in the goodness and rightness of a particular male sorcerer. It's not looking good, is what I'm saying.

The thing that's currently pissing me off worst though is that the 'demons' seem to be the original inhabitants. The humans arrived on a space ship at some point, then forgot all about it. That suggests the other intelligences around here are probably there first. And that would mean the whole thing is about how the natives are fighting back against the colonial oppressors. Only they're supposed to be unquestionably evil bad guys. Actual demons, not the evils of demonisation. There has been one who was all noble and died to save a human life, but one has to wonder why, from the available data.

It's possible it will all turn around and women will do anything useful and not evil and maybe the thing with the demons can somehow work out to be not evil... but I'm on page 121 and every time it reveals a new thing it just makes me wonder why I still own it.

The thing where women are oppressed in fantasy books becomes even more egregiously stupid when it's supposed to be some kind of far future after the fall space colonists thing. Like, they'd have had to reinvent sexism. And feudalism for that matter. And not in the interesting Barrayaran don't assume the words mean the same things way, just an unexplained presence of Dukes. From a worldbuilding standpoint I'm not buying it.

Also, why is the future full of white people?

That's always creepy.

I can think of stories where people accidentally colonise hell, possibly via portals. I'd send some asian people though, probably Buddhists, and have the whole entire focus of the story be the whole enlightenment and not acting like demons thing. Like, whatever the locals look like, the only valid thing is to learn to get along and be excellent to each other. That one does overlap with colonialism in the 'teaching them how to be civilised' way though. But if you accidentally portal to a heavenlike realm and have to learn how not to be jerks then that's a whole different story.

stories are big tangles.

I'm just very very dubious of ones where you can tell who is evil just by looking, especially when 'evil' happens to live on lands the new guys want.

*facepalm*

so I was filling out a plot bunny with a telepath in it, and she's trying to Not Think of something, so foolishly I tried to think of a thing that would grab your attention and fill up your brain, like an earworm only more so.

So now I have images of Homer Simpson dancing in a grass skirt in my head, and I don't even know where they come from.
