Calculated Risks
May. 11th, 2021 06:07 pmFinished reading a second Seanan McGuire book in a row. It was good reading. I like the story, but I wouldnt want pretty much anything that happens in it to have happened to characters we care about, so, yikes. Also I have opinions about the end (spoilers) :( Read more... )
I love how these books say people are people, diverse and different people, with different and frequently conflicting needs, so team good guy are the ones who stop killing people.
It introduces a lot of speed bumps and think agains and manages some epic fight scenes, but the stories are seriously making an argument for getting along.
It's refreshing.
... I read too many rpg rulebooks, and after a while it's waaaaay too easy to see a bestiary and a lot of hit points, but here, characters.
I also like how this book as a first chapter setup is all 'what if university campus gets dumped onto another world', for I too have spent time staring out a library window wondering that.
UEA has a hive right on campus tho.
Also, ziggurats.
