Fonts gone horribly wrong

I'm trying to figure out what's gone long with the display on my big computer. Fonts in Firefox look godawful skinny, difficult to read. Fonts on Internet Explorer look fine, for the exact same pages. Any clues? Any ideas where I could get clues?

I'd say check your screen resolution, but if the fonts are okay in other apps, that wouldn't be it.

thanks, but nope, the screen resolution has probably changed but half the fonts look fine anyway.

Japanese encoding? That has skinny font for roman characters.

encoding says western or unicode, so probably not.

the more I poke it the more I find weird inconsistencies, so is not simples.
