I'm reading about economic and political theory in the 1700s, specifically the bit about why only Gentlemen were suited to be the boss of everyone. Gentlemen were people who owned land and didn't have to do any work. They didn't know enough to do any particular trade or industry or line of business. And this was the important part, that they didn't know. Because, you see, if they knew about one job, they would have a distorted view of all the rest; they would have distorted their minds just as doing only the one task distorts the body. In their wide ranging ignorance they could prove they were disinterested in any one particular thing. And this, you see, suited them uniquely to be the boss of everything, because they weren't interested particularly in anything.
The most ignorant people won..
This explains a whole hell of a lot about history.
