Apparently I am cranky about labels
Aug. 2nd, 2011 04:36 pmIf a guy thinking about their boyfriend is slash then a guy thinking about their wife is het. Not gen. Gen is for adventure, not wives.
... that kind of rules out all TV ever but I'm having opinions here anyway.
Also, I'm getting increasingly irritated by the division of slash and femslash, however they spell it. I realise it's a useful set of labels for some purposes, but it keeps on being used in a 'slash! not femslash!' kind of way, like absence of girls is a selling point. And, yes, I just complained about getting het all over my gen, which looks like complaining about presence of girls, but somewhere in the depths of my illogic I'm sure that makes sense. I was complaining about default heterosexuality. I still want my gen to pass Bechdel and have womens all everywhere.
Extreme cranky is reserved for fic that doesn't use the archive warning for rape and doesn't use the warning for not using warnings. Having read too many paragraphs of it I think it's because it doesn't know that aliens made them do it sex pollen drug everyone in sight and make them fuck is in fact non con. It's creepy and I wish to wash my brain now.
... I know Torchwood went there repeatedly, but I thought it knew it was being creepy. Which is a different story. As it turns out, maybe not so much, which is repeated *facepalm*.
... actually I know several canons went there. It remains creepy.
I'm trying to remember if I've watched TV since Doctor Who finished. Or watched DVDs even. Maybe a couple hours.
TV and films seem to be missing some crucial ingredients that fanfic is currently feeding.
It isn't the porn. I keep skipping the porn. It's really frustrating finding a story with a massive word count that turns out to be like a sex manual with intermittent snuggling. It can be perfectly in character and set between specific episodes and all with the grammar and everything and I don't actually care cause I can think of my own thanks, I was looking for a story.
It's only partly the same sex relationships. It's kind of nice when stories admit we exist, but I have two whole TV series that do that, and I'm not watching them.
I think emotional continuity is part of it. Relationships that happen, instead of getting assumed to be somewhere behind the action. Stuff that happens having an impact on a character. So many of our canons have so many changes that only make sense from a Doyle point of view, and then fanfic tries to Watson them and it gets all complicated.
I don't know, maybe I'm just on a text kick. But I'm not reading actual paper books either. Just fanfic.
I am a mystery.
I am a mystery who wants more chocolate and some sleep.

Date: 2011-08-02 10:21 pm (UTC)I think I get it: you want your gen full of plot and adventure, but free of porn and romance. And you want one cover-all label for all same sex romance/porn and the names in the pairings would be enough to tell a reader if this is their cup of tea or not.
Those stories where the author doesn't realize it's non-con or dub-con? Yeah, very disturbing. :S
Good luck in finding nice long actual gen adventures. :o)
