Have realised some of the stuff I want to do with the biotechnicians gets really simple if you add mind controlling parasites.
... yeah, you don't get to write that often. SF is its own world...
Using birds for sky eyes or wolves for the ground. Beastmaster stuff. Without the symbiotes you have to get some mechanism for how it all works, possibly involving plugs into brains. With the symbiotes you already have something plugging into all the brains it wants to. So either there's many symbiotes that can communicate with each other whatever form they're in, which would be sort of fascinating, them trying to put a civilisation together with such a wide range of effective IQs. Or you have one symbiote that jumps ship frequently. I think I like the communication idea best. They can all plug in to each other as well as to their hosts, then they can network. Skip the language entirely, just communicate across species through having this one same species plugged in to all of them. And then it's important to remember that while some of them have at some point been human, many would only have been eagles or wolves or cows or whatever else. So to get them to cooperate you'd have to make sense to an eagle. And then one day their human goes away and they want something from the hands people, and they need a volunteer to be the next beast 'master'. Probably a volunteer. The ones by the water wait for someone to just turn up. But there's plenty of things that could get urgent...
