I sat down to do reading for The Short Story.
Then I put the computer on to look up Labov's story whatsits again, which the reader keeps telling us to pay attention to without sparing the six words to remind us what they are.
Then since it was on I might as well do the free writing we were supposed to do in class last week (I ate breakfast instead).

The idea with free writing is to start with a phrase and write whatever comes into your head in response to it for a few minutes, then pick a different phrase and do that, and then go back and pick out themes you might turn into a story later on.

When I sit down to write what comes into my head is apparently a thousand word character single scene of character background and introduction. Because that's what I do. Quite often.

So now I'm wondering if it is possible to screw up this short story unit by having written too many short stories to fit their suggestions.

And it's not even that I did this free association stuff already, since it wasn't one of the characters I have a file full of costume and career references for. I'd just been reading about horses so I wrote the horse guy. Somewhat badly.

I already know that given two of the other phrases I get Rhodri and Sean.

If I'm meant to be random, well, this is what there is in this head.

I don't think I should post it because (a) it's not very good and (b) things for lessons should not look like they've been copied off the web.

The assignment is only 1000 words of short story. I could polish this for that. Then it must be careful to avoid the plagiarism software.
I could polish lots of things for that.

I don't know how to write about my process though. 'Having read everything in front of my eyes for at least thirty years, this is what comes out of my head' isn't quite what they're looking for.
