beccaelizabeth: Tony Stark, Iron Man, face with HUD lights (Tony HUD)

Dreamed I followed Steve Rogers into weird caverns and eventually pitch black places.
Found Tony Stark there. Lost Steve.
Tony & I chased after Steve, and found two of him.
One of him looked exactly right to Tony. The other looked exactly right to me. (Tony's idea of his height relative to Captain America is, far as I could see, somewhat flattering, or dependent on him being in really big boots. From Tony's point of view, I am a tiny person who thinks the Captain is huge. Other differences were more subtle. Like, My Steve had a WWII gun, but Tony's just had the shield.)
Neither Tony nor I knew how to get out of the caves, but the Steves claimed they did.
Neither Steve reacted to the other at all. Like the other wasn't there at all.

So, logic problem: Which one was real?
Was either one real?
Was Tony real?

And, once you're down to that, are the caves real, and what would constitute 'out' anyway.

I hypothesised the caves were Tony's, because when I was chasing Steve the surroundings had been concrete and grey dressed blocks, but now Tony was here there were brown rocks with flickering fire lights on them.
He didn't much like the idea he carried his caves around with him.

Plus it didn't get us anything useful like tools.

So, we sat down, back to back, and tested some hypotheses. Tony concentrated on Rhodey and Happy and Pepper, the people he could be sure would come after him, but ones I hadn't met. I heard his descriptions of them, but I didn't have any existing data to draw on. If two of them turned up, we could be sure the caves could do that, and the two would probably be divergent enough there'd be no argument which one was most 'real'.

Which wouldn't get us out of there at all. And didn't fix my Tony dilemma.

And if the new people arrived, did that mean both our Steve's were wrong, or just the one?
And if they were both wrong, did that suggest Steve was out there somewhere, trying to rescue his idea of Tony?

I pondered this long after waking, but could find no logical solution, other than sod it, rescue everyone.

Or, to be precise, sod it, be rescued by everyone, since once you're in the Matrix there is no getting yourself out of it, you can never be sure again.

So, you know, many kinds of suck.

I think the solution is: be rescued by someone you've never met before.
It can't be copying from your brain if you weren't actually expecting that person to turn up.

So the only people you can trust are complete strangers.

*blinks*

But then that only works if they're complete strangers to everyone.

No, way too sober for this rabbit hole. *shakes it off*

The whole Matrix thing, it only really works to decide it don't matter. Else you're just screwed.

As a story, it's fun because you compare/contrast how people see each other.

As a dream it leaves you poking the furniture to make sure it's still real.

But I have that reaction a lot. Like the other night I woke up remembering I'd just woken up, heard an explosion, had the fire alarm go off, and started to get up before being knocked down by another explosion. Only, logically, since I just then woke up *again* and there was no smoke, fire, or alarms, that hadn't happened. But you couldn't prove it by my brain.

Or possibly that happened and I'm in a rebooted sector of Matrix.

Sod it, as long as there's enough fic here I'm good.

baronjanus: I was searching for the answer, it turns out it's rock and roll. Hugh Dillon Works Well With Others (context helps)

Having read only parts because my eyes are wobblyspinny, let me try:

Both Steves are real, and the cave set is real, but you and Tony belong in different worlds and so aren't real to each other; you see each other, and each other's Steve, through a tear in the fabric, or a shimmer in the space, or however you want to call it when things mesh where they shouldn't.

If you really want to go Freudian, you can say the difference is the class distinction and the distribution of wealth that prevents you and Tony Stark from existing in the same world unless you are lost in dark caves. And hang out with a man who has been through a massive transformation AND a big time-out. There.
