Once again I did an hour of studying before I found myself staring into space planning what college courses I'd get Tony Stark to pay for as I got qualifications suitable to plan a space colony.
I studied some more time after that in theory, but I think I managed like a paragraph in half an hour.
My brain is just not steerable.

then I ate vegetable noodles (very yum) and watched Babylon AD (WTF? deleted now.)

A lot of the random reading I grabbed about gender and science fiction just leaves me wondering which film they were watching. I mean, there's a lot about Star Wars and that original trilogy, and there's one essay based on the idea Leia isn't sexy (it explicitly rules out the gold bikini as not counting, but even so, have they met a geek? majority opinion is she's hot.), doesn't let her hair down (did they only remember the bikini part of that movie?), and is sort of nothing to do with sex and just being pure and white and princess-y (er, who starts kissing people? who admittedly turn out to be her brother, but that's Lucas being strange.) Another essay is all about how Leia is powerless and the film is only about Luke's coming of age and Luke being the only one with Jedi power. There is another. Do they just not watch these movies? And Leia kicks all the arse! They go to rescue her, she has to rescue them, there's some total mutual rescuing going on there. Also, talking about how it's all about Luke's ascension to power within a patriarchal system because the bosses are the Emperor and Vader kind of misses the point where EVIL Empire and you can totally see it as Leia kicking the arse of ultimately self destructive patriarchy. ... okay, you may have to squint a bit, but still.

There's more weirdness in abundance. Why am I studying cultural studies? Why am I stuck with a discipline that thinks Freud is the last word in psychology? Why did I just spend pages and pages having the Freudian imaginary and Lacanian symbolic explained to me if by the end they were just going to say that actually the dude they were talking about reckons it's all about the lost father and not reuniting with the lost mother the way the other dudes said? What was the relevance, really? Do published books have to prove they did the reading too? :-p
... making out all 80s movies are about the secret quest to unite with the lost father figure and re-establish a patriarchal dynamic is an interesting argue, if you leave out, you know, watching said movies. And you can't have a movie be about both returning to one's childhood and becoming the patriarchal father figure. Peter Pan with his Lost Boys yes, and dear lord is there a lot of that around, especially in action movies, but you can't just say they're then magically the father figure because reasons. Show your work or admit what you're toking.

... okay, once something mentions Freud I should just give up and read something else, I just get wound up elsewise.

It's far easier to find stuff about films than about TV. I mean I've got plural essays about the Doctor Who movies, the ones with the technicolor Daleks and the absent minded professor dragging small kids through time and space, but it's a bit trickier finding things on actual TV Doctor Who. The proper stuff. This is probably because it's all in books at the UEA and I haven't got out the house to go get them. But it looks like everyone looked at 50 years of Doctor Who and went hmmmmm... no, you know what, we'll just study this one movie, that way we can get away with not watching the TV show and calling only other movies context.

Context is a lot of TV and paper science fiction at the time, and probably also radio though I've given up on finding any mentions of said medium, they must be hiding somewhere I know not of. Context is not just 50s movies and that one Quatermass.

If I could find one argument solid enough to apply to Doctor Who and then annoying enough to get in a proper argument with then I'd be golden, I could write lots if I could start like that. But mostly so far I'm discovering what Doctor Who is not. Doctor Who is not science fiction blockbuster movies, or action movies, or ... things that are not Doctor Who.

So I need to get the right books out now my brain is working again.

Can totally do that. Just as soon as things open again.
