B o r i n g 'dark fantasy'
Jan. 3rd, 2014 04:10 pmThat The Best British Fantasy 2013 series editor Steve Haynes, the one I gave up on yesterday and just went to sleep? It gets worse. It devolved into a bunch of grubby horror stories. All ghosts and murder and suicide and domestic abuse and sexual assault and incest. Recurring theme of women getting dead because a bloke fancies them. Nothing I'd remotely call fantasy. Even the ghosts are the half hearted sort that are probably a dream or them imagining things. Right now this book has zero chance of gaining shelf space, and is making a play for 'kill it with fire'.
I keep reading because it's short stories so there's a possibility the next one will completely change tone and be worth my time, but right now that possibility is extremely distant.
Load of mislabelled rubbish.
