Once again, everyone is mind controlled and deliberately out of character.
... at this point, out of character is their character.
It's tedious and ridiculous.

The actual plot? Terrorists do a really bad thing, so people go hide in caves to train to do a bad thing back to them. Everyone is so angry sad they sit around getting digested/absorbed by a giant alien cave. Then the cave stops being angry and dies of a broken heart.

You know, sometimes I stop and realise how weird Doctor Who gets.

I stopped this one in the middle because it got late and then didn't start again for ages so it sort of lost momentum. It did pretty good on the gradual creepiness increases. They got sucked in, they found creepy things like caves that seemed to bleed and half digested probable humanoids, they eventually found where it was keeping the rest of the humanoid bits all spread out, and a head. Proper nasty.

It's just in any series you're there for the main characters. You can care a bit about the characters in that particular story, but it takes a lot of doing. If everyone, main and one off, is distorted and mind controlled and not even making sense because their choices and moods are motivated solely by the manipulations of an outside force, what are you there for? The idea this is all happening to characters you already care about? But it happens so often I don't even know who Charley is, aside from volatile and the kind of posh that probably smiled at the servants. She didn't get mind controlled into marrying anyone this time, so that's nice, but she was still mind controlled again. How are we meant to care for a puppet?

The one interesting bit was the Doctor being so absolutely sure he was free of the influence, that he'd only noticed it not been steered by it, and yet somehow coincidentally ending up where the enemy wanted him only to realise that oops, it had had him by the curiosity all along. That was stylish. Also about how he was grieving too because his whole universe and the very concept of time is lost to him now. Except Sad!Doctor acts kind of like all the time Doctor so having a little speech about it don't do much.

I've listened to so much of 8 and Charley in a row now, and I'm kind of wondering if the ones writing/making it ever did that, because it's really repetitive. I can't even remember the title on the next story but I'm going to put in a bet that mind control will once again crop up, maybe with a bit of amnesia and possibly a side order of forced marriage. Charley has no agency, and barely any personality, and it's pissing me off.

... possibly I should stop listening then...
