Mar. 20th, 2015 04:20 pmI'm vaguely irritated by all the 'what if everything was HYDRA!' MCU theories.
Because then it's like, what if there's secretly only one enemy?
What if the only motive is fascist control?
What if the only thing we have to worry about is nazis?
Because then we're not worrying about arseholes with a profit motive at all! Or people with a personal grudge against arseholes. Or misogynist creeps who wouldn't take no for an answer so progressed to kidnapping.
No, secretly it was all HYDRA, who are all nazis, who are the enemy long since destroyed, so that's all put neatly back in the box, isn't it?
I mean, it's creepy because the actual theme in Winter Soldier is that the things the intelligence services do right here right now are what make them HYDRA, the old bad fear/control methods are still around, going strong, and at every level of government. It's not about infiltration or a bunch of bad seeds in a good garden, SHIELD is HYDRA. When Captain America told off the Director and his plan and said that's not about freedom, it's about fear? That was talking to straight up SHIELD. And then they wimped out and changed the game slightly so people that think that SHIELD is basically okay have something else to point out. Okay, whatever.
But going back retroactively and pinning everyone to HYDRA? I really do hate that the senator that thought Tony was a jerk who shouldn't have his own personal weapon of mass destruction turns out to be HYDRA. Because, you know, that's a legit concern. Drunk playboy blew up his own house, there's pretty good reason to be worried he has weapons that big, possibly they could have that be not in fact evil, except then they have to question their whole genre.
And then suggesting that Stane was HYDRA? That's just not necessary. Dude wanted money, wanted to control a giant company, wanted to make the boom stuffs and sell them to all everyone. Same like AIM. They were after money. And they used fear to get it. Doesn't make them HYDRA. That simples things up too much.
As for Howard Stark's death, I kind of like how basically everyone everywhere had a motive. I'd also be willing to buy that it was an accident, and a bunch of people claimed it as their shiny. It's more interesting when it's full of possibility.
Flattening out the world until there's only HYDRA vs the good guys is kind of creepy, and removes all incentive for reflection, as long as you think you've avoided being an actual nazi. Boring.

Date: 2015-03-23 07:51 pm (UTC)it's like they're trying to say spying is the problem, and people are hearing spying more is the solution, and it's worrying.
"People choose to be bad and if you don't choose to be bad you don't have to do any work to make sure you're good." *nods a lot* that is such a common thinking error though, and applies if replace 'bad' with 'racist' or 'sexist' or whatever. Like bad has to be conscious of its own evil before it counts. pretty sure it all counts.
*waves hi* feel free to friend, internet is for reading

Date: 2015-03-24 04:58 am (UTC)Yeah. People want to believe that they are automatically in the right and don't want to have to check over their actions carefully. It's understandable but it can lead to awful things.
*waves back* nice to meet you!
