BFA DW 216 Maker of Demons

I'm not sure if this story doesnt quite work or if I'm just not in the mood for it. Like, the bad guys seemed to be very stupid, but obviously they could plausibly be really wrong, that would be why they do wrong stuff. The story split Ace off to follow a soldier around by being captured. He's one of the indigenous people and the whole plot depends on none of them figuring out how they're being poisoned, in a century. I am not a fan of stories where it takes an outsider one episode to notice what the natives havent in a century. Other than that he's a bit interesting and sympathetic, but, it just felt wonky to make the natives these ultra violent monsters in response to the invaders. That bit felt off.
Also there was a whole Tempest thing going on but I didnt notice how it actually enriched the story? Like, I'm not as familiar with the play, but the story didnt click to illuminate new angles for me. Probably I should at least read the Tempest again before having an opinion on that bit.
There were women, and they talked to each other, and I still didnt find them interesting because I didnt feel like the one off characters had individual motivations. I mean one did if 'be even more homicidal than daddy' counts, but something wasn't working for me there.
So with so many things leaving me a bit 'yeah but' then that's my impression of the story

I had woken up after four hours sleep, having a worried and unable to get back to sleep, so it's entirely possible the whole thing was a Me mood, nothing to do with the story after all.
