Today my mum and my brother visited and we ate a food and watched Thor Ragnarok.
Big success.

We ate one of the potato egg things from Sainsburys that mum likes, like a third each, and then me and mum had chocolate pudding from the free froms, and mum had peach in mango jelly because she wanted to try the vegan sort. She agrees the texture is Odd. But my brother did not want to try any of the options, so, only potato egg and ribena for him. I shall try more options next time maybe.

I got the tray table out, the one I thought would be or my laptop but it just never worked out. My brother used it happily for his writing, and mum liked it and kept thinking of ways it would be useful for her, so happy mother's day there.

Ragnarok was funny in ways that pulled apart the previous stories. I liked. It changed register but it raised good questions. And the story clearly liked Loki better than some previous iterations. And set up potential story arc, God of Mischief who could be so much more. I've seen comics, there's places to go. Thor also got story but it's his same story? Find your power and understand what's really important. Again. So, you know, cool but familiar, it's just spirals so he's better off than before.

I emphatically did not like how the story threw people away. Jane dismissed in a couple of sentences, but also what happened to way too many people. I know it's a movie saying the stakes are super high, but really?

Hulk was better. Than previous movies. Hulk gets to be a people. And there's completely taking the piss out of some annoying bits of Ultron, so.

I felt a few times it needed to take a beat more to just feel stuff. And I dont know if I'll like it more or less on repeat viewing. But it seemed like it did what it set out to do and gave a new angle on an increasingly huge 'verse.

I also felt it took a step away from the 'sufficiently advanced aliens' explanation for Asgard, with making a point about a difference between Lord and God. And Asgard as another Realm was somewhere you could travel to in spaceships like in Guardians but also somewhere Strange needed to keep an eye on, perhaps somewhere with its own rules and magic, different than you could get to in a rocket. Which is better, there's already enough aliens, go full on and explore the responsibilities of power. Also gods drawing their power from people is a popular notion of a democratic age.

Loki arriving weeks before Thor stitches the films together in interesting ways. Like, it might be a property of where they went, or it might be about how they went there, and then all fuzziness in timelines gets more interesting. And does time in Asgard pass the same as elsewhere?

Loki had so much fun in bits of this. Other bits not so much. Thor tricking him back, probably not fun. Most of it though? His father greeting them both as sons and saying his mother would be proud, the whole conversation with Thor while they're shooting people together where the words say they're apart but the actions are in sync, and then what tumblr pointed out as the best present for your chaotic neutral sibling, asking him to blow the place up. And just assuming he'll get himself out, which he does.

Story likes Loki quite well.

Also he sent Odin into retirement. Which Odin had been trying to do since the start of the first Thor film. And if he knew he didnt have time left, fair enough. And then he decides to let the realms go free and focuses on the arts. Not bad. Like Thor's objections are valid, about responsibility, but, especially after what Hela revealed, the whole colonizing power bit, Loki did pretty okay.

Makes it even harder to fit Avengers into the story without the mind gem. He talked like Lawful Evil in that one. He enjoys the power and adulation, get everyone to kneel, sure, but his best day?

"Your saviour is here!"

... yeah, you can tell who is my favourite...

Ragnarok was pretty good and left a lot of new and interesting story lying around. Plus gave all the tools for fixing all the bits one might not like. And fixed a lot of things it didn't like.

So, fun.

One of these days I'll catch up and watch a movie in time my meta may be relevant, instead of seeing it through a tumblr filter.
one day.

But today was pretty good. Foods, family, and film.
