I keep reading m/m because then fic will have at least one element I'll like
and I like the new exclusion search, even though what I'm looking for is No Archive Warnings Apply
but it's still really hard to find stuff with a plot plot.
At the moment I feel like I've read hundreds of stories and found like a handful that even use the distinctive features of the 'verse. There's a setting with a lot of interesting implications, there's characters who have some Issues to work through, and there's... literally thousands of fics where the only difference the setting makes is how they get their lube.
Which is fine! If that's what you want to read. But if you started with some lovely politics and went looking for more then it is... frustrating.
Like, I am looking for things that are not about homophobia, learning to accept one's sexuality, or mutual pining. I mean, pining is great as an element, but if the entire plot is that someone can save the world but still lack the self confidence to even just ask someone for coffee, I'm... really bored of that. I mean, these people look like movie stars, if they can't like themselves what hope have the rest of us got?
And if the reason the characters don't get together is one or both wants children then that's just going to be super annoying at this point, I have read so many of those, they're all Very Foolish, there are options, not to mention a 'verse with a lot of reasons to have random orphans around, AND characters with serious in character watsonian and series message doylist reasons to want to demonstrate that family is more than just blood, sheesh, seriously, get some in character options in here please, we don't even have to get creative with the reproductive technologies and yet we can get a whole lot more creative than these fics have without even leaving current real possibilities. ... I have Feelings and Opinions and... am moving on now.
So just, stuff with a plot beyond the romance parts, and queer characters.
Possibly what I am looking for is 'books'?
Does anyone here have favourite fics that fit those criteria?
