I watched the very first episode of Torchwood again
because iplayer
and it's weird
because they're trying to make them look all mysterious and cool
and like, we know them? so they're just, you know, them? they screw up a lot.
... the most in character thing from the first ep was probably still Owen ordering pizza...

actually everything they do with alien tech was very them.
unfortunately.

it's weird also because they do objectively awful things but because we had those arguments a lot already I'm just not really reacting to them.

like yes Owen's a twat, we knew, moving on.

and that's kind of a problem, because, objectively awful.



It's also weird because it spends time on the whole 'actually aliens are real' section and like, we're watching science fiction? it's a spin off of Doctor Who? What are we really getting out of saying the people in universe are too dim to know what we know?

I guess we're meant to get the feeling you can look around at our world and see an adventure waiting to happen
but like
with bonus sense of viewer superiority?

I don't know, seems weird.

means bending humans way out of shape though. I mean in the Torchwood universe it's just generally accepted that sometimes the whole planet hallucinates the same thing. whatever their model is for how humans work it diverges significantly from our own.


What else...

I still like and dislike the same characters. Sometimes I rewatch a show and find my perspective shifted since last time. Wonder if it will later this time.


I did feel a weird sense of time passing when the clothes and hair looked, you know, not old old, but old? And it's 2006 so, well, a tiny bit old from here.

Actually I can't tell if fashion has slowed down this century or if I just got old.
like I lived through seeing all those so it dont seem like it changed much.

oh well.




I think Suzie's speech about how there's a big brilliant universe out there but we just get all the shit is an interesting starting point. The first ep is Torchwood setting out what it's about, and it starts there. Murder and betrayal and sewers.

Also assuming the weevils are guys in masks? Like the guy says 'you should get plastic surgery' and then reckons he's only joking and I'm like, wondering if weevils are really that far past possible? granted, Big Teef, but still.

Also reacting like that because someone *in a hospital* doesn't give you verbal answers to verbal questions currently strikes me as creepier than the weevil design.

Obviously once they got up to throat tearing that was creepier.

But like the design looked like they were just one step too far from normal, leaving Gwen to question if she was even seeing it. So like, I end up wondering how she responds to edge of normal, too.


Also I still don't get why Torchwood fake the deaths and hide the bodies. Like, that's just weird. They're not hiding anything secret or useful, are they?

Unless they're solely trying to hide their own involvement.


Also it was a rubbish way of sealing somewhere off.


Didn't make much sense.


Oh well.




Jack is creepy and thinks he's All That. He's having a lot of fun for someone wiping a memory. And why have that conversation in a bar? If it's secret enough to erase it's secret enough not to blurt.

They have their name on their car. Secret is daft.



Ianto is somehow even younger than I remembered.

I remember the first time we saw Jack stand up.
It was such a trip.
And now it's like, oh yeah, that's Jack.

That must be so fun to see without spoilers though. I remember.


... huh, guess I feel more like Torchwood than Gwen this time around.

I still think it's interesting. I still don't think Torchwood are the heroes, just the protagonists.

And as I recall the quality will be very variable
but I'm still subscribing for the characters in 2020, so, they got something right...
