I continue to read through the Justice League International omnibus, and I just read the Extremists arc.
Very drama and very Wacky. I like it.
But there's one bit that hits different after this year:
the JLE get transported to a dead alternate Earth, where the last survivor is a theme park inventor, cryogenically frozen when he realised there was no cure for his illness and he was running out of time.
One of the League say his illness sounds like some kind of influenza
and he's all 'exactly, so you can see how little time'
but they're all 'on our earth we can!?'
and so they bring him back to their Earth.
... with a lethal infectious respiratory disease.
... on the assumption that it was somehow stupid of him to be afeared of it.
... I think after this year I kind of want to yell at the League a lot?
I mean yes the threat of nuclear annihilation literally hanging over their heads Also needed dealing with, but... *shudders*
So now I have a really dark and not especially interesting AU in mind, where something like this year or the 1918 flu kicks off in the comics JLI era. The heroes would be useless. It would be very depressing and very much worse with the lower tech level. And they wouldnt necessarily even know what they had done.
It's just odd looking back and seeing how the threat level assessment was just... waaaaaay different. And not even because it was a quarter century ago. It would have looked reasonable even in 2019.
*big sigh*
So.
Other than that some big hero stuff is happening, with the JLI typical range of weird, so I like it.
It's just different.
