Torchwood: Three Monkeys
Feb. 21st, 2021 04:12 pmMy first thought was to recommend listening to this one without knowing what on earth is going on, because that's where Andy starts, and it does some stuff after that that seems very Torchwood whilst also being, basically, two guys getting annoyed at each other in a car.
But a trigger warning comes up: discussion of a family member's suicide.
Okay... so. You know how Torchwood combines the mundane and alien in ways that range from the terrifying to the ridiculous? This one starts mundane and depressing, but soon seems heavy on the ridiculous, until you start to think about it. And then it is proper creepy.
And, also, the worst bits are all stuff that actually happened? Like headlines stuff. I was listening to the little chatty bit after the story and they were saying so. ... but I did not finish listening to the chat bit because for some reason it makes me weirdly uncomfortable when they're out of character. I don't know, I just live here. ANYway, the stuff Andy explains anout his family, that is just stuff that could happen and is based on what did happen. So that's a bit awful to think about. Adding aliens to blame actually makes that easier, except really, all the deciding parts were just humans being humans.
Which is the pattern in Owen&Andy stories.
... this one is waaaaaaaay less dark than the other two, but still.
I paused to read someone else's review, and it complained about the action not getting started quick enough and ending abruptly. But that is odd, because the action was not the story, the story was Owen and Andy in a car having talks about, like, what kind of a life they have, and life goals, and being increasingly rude to each other. Like the 'action' isn't, it's just about what they say and it builds up perfect to the ending of that.
I really liked the character stuff. Very people shaped, very particularly Andy and Owen.
And whenever it starts sounding like an ordinary police story there's something about n dimensional whatevers and it's Torchwood still.
I liked this one a lot. Set when Owen is dead, doesn't let you forget it, shows and tells you a lot about Andy, and what he thinks of Torchwood by now.
I put it on to block out the weird vacuum cleaner sounds coming from outside though and those are still going so I'm sure some of the subtleties got tangled with whatever is making a noise out there.
But still good.
